why is moonlight magic so hard to get?

They have limited Moonlight Magic events to one per season, rather than one per park, to help give more folks a chance to get them I guess.

I think you can go to more than one Moonlight Magic event per membership per year. They have been grouping them in batches. I think the DCA event in Feb was grouped with a couple of events at WDW. You could only go to one.
The first registration period required a DVC room reservation. You could only book the event that your reservation encompassed. You could only use the membership tied to the room reservation. (Of course, there is a second registration period which is open to all memberships, but there is just a slight chance a person will be able to get tickets because there are so few slots--except maybe the DCA event).

There is another Moonlight Magic registration coming up on May 15th. They are grouping several events together again. You can only book one in that grouping. Same rules as before.

I don't know if 2 memberships could get more than one MM party per grouping. I think you would have to book 2 rooms (one under each membership). Each room would have to encompass the targeted party dates. But, if you were going to the same party, I think you only need one membership number--though I am a little hazy on how you get that set up with multiple rooms. I believe you can get the total number of occupants in the room for a 2 or 3BR --so you could get more than the maximum of 5 in that case.
Thank you for the detailed explanation!

This is the one perk I would gladly get rid of. I attended one and it was totally not worth it. It was very crowded. I would rather they give us good discounts on the existing cash events.

I've attended two (both at Studios) and they were absolutely not crowded. Rides at Hollywood Studios were all a walk on - yes, even Rise of the Resistance. Some of the character interactions had a bit of a line but considering it was the only chance to see some of these characters - more than reasonable. Towards the end the night the lines for food got long as people scrambled to spend the remainder of their tickets.

I'd say you should give Moonlight Magic another chance if the timing of an event works out for your travel in the future.

It's gonna happen again with DCA. I feel like they do it on purpose. Lets take the hardest to book resorts in all of the portfolio and give them way way under 7 months notice. I am lucky that I have enough points now to have 5 days booked when I only need 1-2 for MM, hoping MM will land 1 of the 5 nights I chose to pre reserve at 11 months. Not all members are fortunate to be able to this and it's real crappy of DVD to do the DCA MM this way.
For DCA: It's been a few years ago, but they have done a few in the week before Thanksgiving. Lately, it seems to be in the last week in January/first week in Feb. (2025 Chinese New Year was January 29th, so I think that might be why it was Feb 3 this year).

So, if they continue to have these events in 2026. And, if it is in the last week of Jan/first week of Feb. again.... You are right--We are already pretty close to the 7 month booking window!

Would so much prefer around Thanksgiving time.
