Why is it so hard to just say "Sorry"?

Something else a bit of a stretch but some times my cat will get put as I am
Trying to leave for the day not often but do you think that is what happend hear and he will get across the street ( fast boy)

Perhaps the dog owner should look into a fence if his animals won't stay on his property.
Since no one can force the dog owner to put up a fence or otherwise keep the dogs on property, it does not seem unreasonable for the OP to put up a fence. Not because the lack of a fence makes the OP is responsible for this incident, but simply to prevent another incident.

And whether the incident is from a "domesticated" animal or a wild animal, the result is likely the same.

I have a friend that keeps some very cute chickens. She used to let them run in the yard, until a coyote got one of them. Now they are out and about only when she's there. Otherwise, they are in the coop.

We have friends that kept chickens in a very rural part of their county. They frequently had problems with roaming dogs killing their birds and a fence did no good at all. The dogs would dig under the fence. It got to be difficult to keep planting the fence deeper and deeper into the yard, and expensive. They finally gave up on the chickens.

If the problem persists you have the option of getting the dogs to a rescue shelter if they keep showing up on your property. Just don't tell the neighbor you have any clue where they are.

Much more humane than having to shoot them.

We have a re"pet"ative visitor. The first time dog was secured in an enclosure on our property (Sunday night) until we could get a phone number for his owners when town hall opened on Monday; because all the dog had for ID on him was a license renewal tag. Then, we called the owner when they picked the dog up DH told them the next time he would have to call the SPCA.

Our retriever has tags with his name, our telephone number, our Vet's name, his Rabies status, and town license.

We do not own a gun, but we also do not have livestock.

I think your neighbors are totally out of line to let their dogs run free. However, I can't blame someone for avoiding talking to you and not apologizing to you after your husband's reaction was to threaten shooting--not something more normal like reporting them but, shooting them.

I know you came back later and said you would not really shoot the dogs, but how are the neighbors to know this? I find it very odd that you are willing to threaten to shoot and kill the dogs, but not willing to report the illegal behaviour and let the authorities deal with it.

Reading on, it seems once you did report that the neighbor was a complete jerk. That'S too bad, living near such people is always trying. It just seems like your husband was also quick to be aggressive and unneighborly as well---both sides making the situation worse than it has to be.
Just to clarify, my DH never spoke to the neighbor. He spoke to the BIL, but at the time we had no idea who he was. Just a guy who showed up and claimed the dog that we didn't know.

:offtopic: Sorry for the sidebar, but did anyone happen to catch the Good Wife last night? Saying I'm sorry was part of the plot, and looks to be an important piece of shaping this season's plot if I'm reading the tea leaves right.

OP I'd have qualms about addressing this directly with these people at all. Let the dog warden handle it.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs has a rule that says saying you are sorry is a sign of weakness and since its the #1 show on TV, maybe they are taking his lead. Sorry, bad joke, but NCIS is on in the backround today. Growing up I had a chicken that was in our yard and attacked by a neighbors dog. I understand how you feel.

Similar idea here. There are the people who say sorry and the people who say watch it. The idea is which type of person are you going to be. I think the Good Wife is supposed to be figuring that out this season.
