to be seen in a bra but okay to be seen in a string bikini top?

On the 4th I was part of a marching unit that was in local 4th of July parade. Our outfits consisted of specially printed shirts, kahki shorts. Well some of the members didnt pick up their shirts until right before the parade was about to start. One of these was girl about 20. When she got her shirt she was trying to decide where to change into it. We said she could change in the car if she wanted but instead she just changed her shirt between 2 cars where anyone walking by would be able to see. She said that it wouldnt matter if anyone(there were people walking by) did because they wouldnt see anything more than if she was wearing her bikini top. Although some of us thought she should have been more discreet we also agreed with her logic.
Afterwards some us of discussed this and why we its okay for one thing but not the other. We eventually just chalked it up to one of those wierd contradictory society morals.

I'll never understand some "rules" we follow. Like why we can wear a skirt in cold months but are looked at strangely if wearing shorts.

Ive often thought the same thing when Im getting ready to go in the pool and Im walking around my house in a bikini. I would never walk around in just underwear because you can see in my house the way the windows are situated, but I dont think twice about doing it in a bikini. Not to mention standing up on my pool deck for the whole neighborhood to see, wearing only a bikini. I would never be out there in underwear. But really, whats the difference?

I never thought of it like that - but it's true, what is the difference? It's not the fabric anyone is looking at anyway, is it?

I agree that some ideas are contradictory. I could go out in the yard in short shorts and a tank top, or a swimsuit, but I can't go out in a nightgown that covers alot more of me.

Well I actually have been known to do yard work in a bra-- in the back yard (hey, I don't have a strapless bikini top). I don't see a problem. But I wouldn't roam around in bikini bottoms, so I'm not roaming around outside in panties.... well, actually I do in the brief-type "panties."

I think some of it has to do with the setting, though. For the girl in the parade, it might not have been appropriate even if it WERE a bikini top (I'm not saying it wasn't; I don't know the atmosphere of the parade). It's one thing to see someone in a bikini on the beach; it's another when they walk into my clinic wearing one. I even don't like seeing that at theme parks. The bikini tops don't bother me if they're tasteful, but it always strikes me as cheesy when girls/women over 12 are in full-bikini mode walking around Islands of Adventure. Ugh.
