Why is ground meat so expensive?

Oh, don't say that to a rabbit owner (pet).

I only shop at the Commissary, there isn't much I can't get there. I don't find anything off post to be cheaper and with the grocery taxes, it definitely isn't cheaper. I am at work 45 hours a week and don't have time to comparison shop, because it really isn't worth it.

I use coupons and can find alot more at our Commissary than I could ever find at Walmart with the coupons I use. My grocery budget went down remarkedly when we were able to go back to shop at the Commissary and we get twice as much for the money.

It's just Dh and I, so I don't have to buy large packages of meat and we eat alot of chicken and turkey and it really is reasonable at the Commissary.

We tried fishing, that was a joke and I loathe hunting, no way would Dh go hunting, he has friends that do and will give him packs of meat sometimes, I refuse to eat it.

You eat meat but not if it is hunted? How do you think they get it out of the cows?

We don't shop at the commissary because I hate going to base and for the hassle I don't think the prices of the little we get is worth it.

I was thinking the same thing. :confused3 I'm working on eating ONLY wild caught fish and game (okay . . . maybe the occasional locally raised chicken, because I really like chicken). Seems both healthier and more humane than most non-organic, farm raised meats.

I buy cross rib roast in sale at Safeway and have them grind it up for me if we need ground beef. They do it for free and it comes out cheaper per lb. plus it's a lot leaner and a better cut of beef. we normally eat ground turkey and I stock up when sunflower farmers market has it on sale for $1.99 per lb.

Exactly, they don't shoot the cows. I don't have to get out and hunt it down, besides, I don't like the flavor of deer meat.

No hassle for us to go to the Commissary, not with the savings we see, and we have a Publix almost in our back yard.

We get a whole or 1/2 cow and pig and its way cheeper! and its better meat! Find a Meat locker in your area. We do have a deep freezer but I would never go back to other meat!

Wegmans gives the illusion that it's expensive because its not JUST a grocery store. All the specialty stuff makes it seem like it should be a more expensive place to shop, and while some of those ununsual items are pricey, the rest of the store isn't. What other store is going to say "We'll take the top selling products and put them on a price freeze for the whole season". I can't wait to see what the Fall items are.

I think you missed my point. Hunting is much more humane than how most cattle are treated. I wasn't making a comment on you not hunting it yourself, but the fact that you refuse to eat what someone else has killed. Not liking it is one thing, not eating it because it was hunted is just silly when you do eat meat.

Apparently, I did. I just can't bring myself to eat deer, the thought of it and the taste doesn't appeal to me. I just don't think I could bring myself to eat any other game either.
