Why is Coronado Unavailable Until August 10?

I saw it mentioned Coronado Springs wasn't available this summer, so I did a check and see it has no availability until 8/10/20. Does anyone have an idea what's going on? Why just here?

Dang. I have a June stay booked a few weeks ago. Still intact. Rumor mill is it could be an NBA hotel site if WDW hosts games. But I can’t imagine they’d quarantine the whole league for two months...

How would they determine who rates Tower vs Outer? 🤣

My husband and I were talking about this very thing! If it is players, who gets tower, and who's out in the boonies in the standard view room?

Interesting to me that you recently booked....
I am curious to see if this is a glitch, a start to more closing, or a temporary NBA hotel??

A couple weeks ago I started thinking about how WDW could open and accommodate this situation. One of the things that crossed my mind was how to handle resort visitors or Cast Members that get 'mild/moderate' sick. Which made me wonder about them designating a resort to become a recuperating facility.

I'm concerned about taking a WDW trip in 2020 and getting sick while my family's there. Keeping me comfortable and isolated in the Gran Destino and Coronado makes it sound slightly better 🤷‍♀️ Maybe? I really don't know. Just a thought.

Someone here shared a story once about how they ended up sick with Norovirus at BC or BW, and the resort seemed so experienced in that type of thing. They kept calling to make sure the person was OK, and kept changing out clean towels.

Interesting. I currently have 2 rooms booked at CSR for the first week of August (1-8). Not sure we’re going then, still undecided, and have a backup for October just in case. I’ll be interested to see if we get an email or call about needing to change resorts... :magnify:

Same here. I have 2 rooms Jul 21-28 that I will most likely cancel, which would be all the harder to do if we got a nice upgrade. I’m not sure when we’d be able to reschedule if we do cancel.

Interesting, when do the rumors say we should know more about this? Anyone know?

I'm booked in the tower for the end of June and the end of August. Very interested in seeing where this goes.

Right? If they upgraded me to a deluxe I’d have to think REALLY hard about canceling, lol.

Some possibilities:
  1. NBA rumor
  2. I think actual guest stays are going to be a lot less then posters on Disney fan sites think. Disney has to open deluxe resorts due to DVC. I think it's possible some resorts will be closed. Might as well stop future bookings at CSR if Disney is considering closing it.
  3. CSR is a convention resort first. Disney might want to keep the resort available in case they are able to reschedule some conventions.

I think the first two are possibilities... maybe they will use it for NBA, maybe it has few bookings and they'd just assume close it to help control crowds if WDW starts with resort guests only?

I don't think possibility 3 could be it, there is plenty of room at CSR for convention guests as well as park guests. When we stayed there last year, there were lots of both, and the tower wasn't even open yet which adds another 500+ rooms.

The NBA rumor makes sense.

The low number of bookings doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If so many people have already cancelled for June/July to the point where bookings are considered low, I would think they'd close POFQ or POR from the moderate category if anything. I'd think they'd keep CBR open due to the Skyliner, and I would think CSR would stay open because of the new Tower, which isn't even a year old. They've put a lot of money into CSR and its presumably their highest rated moderate, so I'd think they'd keep it open for this reason.

Conventions would be hard to re-schedule on such short notice, for vendors/speakers, the resort, and the attendees. I know the ones that are attended by my company have cancelled this year and will resume as normal next year. There are a few that have not yet cancelled (they probably will), but our company has restricted work travel and several people who have planned to attend now have other higher priority initiatives due to changes from Covid 19, so conventions are low priority for them.

The towers, most people would agree, are much nicer than any other moderate. I can't see them putting them in any other moderate. Sure they're "nice", but they aren't close to what the towers are. I would imagine Disney would be making a small fortune if they hosted this and with bookings being low anyway, it helps them condense from at least 1 resort. Moving displaced guests to another resort, presumable an upgrade to a deluxe really doesn't cost Disney anything.

My post you quoted was in response to PP saying that perhaps they are deciding to close CSR because they have a low number of bookings this summer. I disagreed with that - I think if they are going to close any resort in the moderate category due to a low number of bookings, it would be POR or POFQ. Even if CSR has the least number of bookings out of all the moderates, I think they would keep it open and move people from another resort to there, mostly because if the new refurbishments and amenities. Plus they may still have some business travelers over the summer.

And I think because it's new and has better amenities is exactly why they'd offer it to the NBA. These guys are pretty pampered. Guests booked at CSR aren't going to be all that disppointed when they get moved to a deluxe for their troubles. Usually when Disney moves you to another resort it's an upgrade in category, not just a better resort in the same category.
