Why is California wine so overrated?

Love red blends, never know what you're gonna get when you open it. I dont care where it comes from. $12 or less, even better.
I like the Apothic red blends, less than $8 a bottle at Costco!

My favorite white blend is Long Stem White from a vineyard we visited in the Finger Lakes a few years ago (Lakewood). I was surprised and pleased to see them get a mention in the Washington Post recently. They also make a great dry riesling. And because I order 12 bottles at a time, good price.

Assuming the cork doesn't go bad. Nothing worse than corked wine.
I actually talked to George about that when I was down in May …I had ordered 3 small pours, a ‘99 Barolo, ‘95 Chappellet Cab, and a ‘12 Morey St. Denis Burgundy …just my luck George came up to pour and explain the wines to me 😳. So I asked him about the CoraVin and the cork and he said he has almost zero spoilage with thousands of pours.

If you want to try some rare wines at a “reasonable” price this is the place. I was amazed at how much mileage I got out of a 1oz pour 😂

I had to look up where this is. Only been to WDW once and never made it to Disney Springs. I was referring to the cork failing for reasons not related to the CoraVin. Corks do fail which is why some pretty "fancy" wines these days use twist tops.

So many fabulous California wineries with great tasting wines are in the 20-30 dollar range. One of my favorites in that category is MacMurray Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir - 26.99. For less than 20 bucks you can buy the MacMurray Central Coast Pinot Noir -very delicious with roast chicken. The vineyard has a wonderful tie to the Disney Legend, Fred MacMurray. His daughter Kate still lives on the ranch and represents the label.

I also love Italian and French wines...have taken wine tours in both countries...such fascinating history and so many generational farms.

AND, I also have picked wines just because I like the label...and have been pleasantly surprised...as well as ended up using it for a pot roast or something. LOL

The only wines I won't buy are the ones with some movie star's name on the label. All you are doing is paying them a royalty to be associated with that product. Just because I like their work in movies, doesn't mean they know anything about making wine and probably had nothing to do with the quality/taste of that product.

The same with all those “Celebrity Tequilas” that have become trendy the past few years.

When travelling I habitually order wines from whatever country I am in. Last visit to WDW with two adult children, I kept ordering US wines. We couldn’t find anything we really enjoyed; they were just okay. Eventually, my son suggested that we just stop ordering US wines. And US wines are relatively expensive. How can imported wines be cheaper?
I am back next month and would love some recommendations for good US wines at WDW/DS restaurants (WBG aside) . I don’t want to spend more than US$ 100 a bottle. I prefer red, but will drink white if it isn’t heavily oaked. I hate rose.
U.K. wines used to be appalling, but they are slowly getting better. For me still a novelty, rather than a regular tipple.

I don't think the California wines that I have had tasted cheap.

But I also enjoy Kirkland brand wines, so perhaps I am not the best judge :rotfl:

DW and I were on a cruise and went to a wine tasting thing they were putting on. We were just trying to learn the basics--we knew red and white and that was about it. There was 1 guy who kept saying things like, "I'm picking up notes of melon and toast," etc. We tried very hard not to laugh. It was tough.
I’m always excited, to buy wines that say “notes of cherry” or something similar, then somewhat disappointed to not taste the fruit. The my in-laws sent me a case of wine from Murielle vineyards. Yum!

I never understood the appeal of the wines that claim to have “notes of tobacco”. I‘ve not been tempted to try them 🤔
