Why is Allianz classic trip insurance so much cheaper than DCL

I understand that when you purchase trip insurance from Disney, they actually use Allianz as their provider. I did a quote on the Disney Cruise Planner and the cost would be about 4-6 times higher than the $150 quote I just got directly from Allianz website for their "Classic" plan. This covers ALL FOUR PASSENGERS.

Is this just another example of a gross markup or do the plans differ by a significant amount to warrant the increased cost?

Also, since DCL uses Allianz, I feel better about using them, although I've never heard of them before. Can people vouch for their coverage?

I really want to be covered for the following events:

1) Loss of job
2) Illness or injury of one or more travelers
3) Hurricane, Flood or natural disaster that prevents travel from my home to the dock (I'm in Birmingham, Al)
4) Loss of transportation (total loss of my primary vehicle within 2-3 weeks of trip - we will be driving it to Port Canaveral)
5) Loss of home or damage that prevents us from leaving it (fire, flood, wind)

PS: This is my first post. This is a great website for info on Disney Cruises. We've been on a couple of RCI cruises and one carnival cruise and really looking forward to this one on Disney Dream (wanted the large porthole room but all that was available was deluxe family with veranda - still pumped, but I'm checking DCL website every day for an large porthole room for 4)

WELCOME TO THE CRUISE BOARD!!!

There is a markup on insurance through DCL but make sure the plan DCL has and the plan directly with Allinaz is the same plan.

I would call the insurance company and ask specifically if the things you want covered are covered. They would be the ulitimate authority on what is covered or not under a specific plan.

I'm interested too. We've traveled with insurance and very happy that we did!

If you're traveling on Disney Vacation Club points, I believe you'll need to get the trip insurance through Disney. They now have some way to calculate a cash reimbursement for the lost points.

If you're paying for the cruise you have options. In 2004, we booked through a travel agent and she took care of ordering the insurance. It covered the cruise, flight... everything that was pre-paid and not cancelable or might be incurred due to a delayed canceled/trip. Our coverage activated due to Hurricane Frances delaying our cruise and paid for extra nights at WDW All Star Movie and our meals. They were awesome no documentation needed with a hurricane. They had the money we laid out for the hotel/meals in our account before the end of the cruise (so 5-6 days). Disney was also awesome... they gave us 1/2 our money back for the shortened cruise and 25% off our next cruise.

I'm not sure if you book the cruise on the DCL and book your flights separately if that could be added to the policy. You might also consider what other things you may pre-pay or have cancellation deadlines/fees. A couple years ago, we had medical emergency and had to cancel a Disneyland trip... the insurance covered the flight and the pre-paid tickets for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. The hotels would have been covered, but no need as we cancelled the hotels before the deadlines.

Some plans are different in what they cover and what it takes for the insurance to go into effect. The last non-cruise trip we took we got TRAVEL GUARD'S GOLD PLAN from Teel's Travel Planners... kids are covered FREE. I started to do it online, then I ended up calling on a Saturday. Brad Teel answered the phone himself and walked me through the whole thing.... such a nice man (family run travel agency). He let me know that since every one was healthy, we could add the insurance even though we'd planned the trip a while earlier... and it didn't matter that I'd booked the trip direct.

Some plans you can opt for coverage even if you choose to cancel the trip (you don't have to be sick, lose your job, find a hurricane, etc.). It's refered to as "change for any reason" or "change your mind" insurance. It costs something like an extra 50%.

I just ran the numbers for the 3 of us on a 7-Day Fantasy outside cabin. Through Disney it would be $250. TravelGuard Gold thru Teel's was $155 ...with "change your mind" added it was still only $228. I didn't look at the coverage side by side... but it make we want to look into it further :scratchin

I'll be interested to hear what plans others have bought / used.

I am very interested in this. We are reaching our PIF date for our Med cruise and will be needing to purchase insurance!

Hi! :wave2:

Good question. We came across the same question when we were planning our first cruise.

If you are booking yourself, and not using a travel agent I think it would be wise to look into other options. Disney's travel insurance really is good, but it tends to be marked up compared to buying directly through the travel insurance company.

If you are looking for the following:

1) Loss of job
2) Illness or injury of one or more travelers
3) Hurricane, Flood or natural disaster that prevents travel from my home to the dock (I'm in Birmingham, Al)
4) Loss of transportation (total loss of my primary vehicle within 2-3 weeks of trip - we will be driving it to Port Canaveral)
5) Loss of home or damage that prevents us from leaving it (fire, flood, wind)

I would start by going to InsureMyTrip.com . They will give you a side by side quote from over 20 insurance companies. While this is overwhelming in the beginning, you can see exactly what the differences in plans are. Some will cover Loss of Job, some will not. Most all cover Illness or injury, but they all have different limits. So depending on what you are looking for, it is always a good idea to compare. And if you don't want to book through the website, you can get the information and call the insurance company directly.

Also, they have the BBB rating for each company, along with reviews from previous users. I have bought through them before, and coincidentally got Allianz because it has been the best fit for us. Since I have never had to use travel insurance I can't speak to that part. :scratchin

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions that I can help with. Have a great Day!
