I was wondering if any one knew why 20000 Leagues Under he Sea is still there? they closed that attraction well over 7 years ago and they haven't done anything with that space. it seems odd that disney would waste that space. the water is still there, everything but the subs. Does anyone know why they haven't remade this area? Just a question I have wondered about everytime I go.
thanks

There's lots of stories about why the lagoon is still there. Most of them have to do with internal company politics about coming to some concensus about what to do with the area. There's even been recent speculation that the area might come back as an updated version of the ride. The thinking being that it would be a lot cheaper to get up and running since, as you pointed out, a lot of the infrastructure is already there.

:D

This is the biggest eyesore in any of the Disney parks, in my opinion. Either destroy it by whatever means necessary or build a new attraction, but just letting it sit there and not being used seems so ..... Un-Disney to me.

I heard somewhere that the water portion was leaking into the women's dressing rooms below and that they closed the back building to make Mickey's Toon town. I did not hear why they left the lake but I do know that it was only a portion of the ride anyway. I will ask our Aunt who is a CM when I see her next week.

Agreed that something needs to be done with the area. Bad show:( There are so many rumors about the state of the infrastructure, and if the area good be re-themed for another aquatic Disney character(Nemo, Little Mermaid).

We loved to see it when we were in Sky Buckets and now they are gone to.:(

No, both were operating at the same time up until the ride closure in 1994. Mickey's Starland was there long before it became Toon Town Fare.

When I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour in Dec., our guide said that 20,000 Leagues was built right on top of the utilidors in such a way that taking it out and putting anything else there will mean a complex and expensive construction project. That may be so, but I'm with the rest of you. It's wasted space that's been sitting there long enough already! Same with the old Skyway ride in Fantasyland.
