The Running Thread --2025

December/EOY running stuff!

December miles: 141.02
YTD miles: 1509.5 🤩

Of note:
Got my ferritin up to 73 and feel so much better! Massive PR year for me in mile, 5k, 10k and 10 mile! DNF my first real world marathon attempt, will try again in 2026. Strength training was good until fall, need to work on that next year. Waiting on some cardiac test results but still plowing ahead and excited for MW, we fly down on Monday! 🎉

ATYQOTD: I don't know if I had any major race related accomplishments, but I got to be a pacer for a few more races this year and I've enjoyed it. I keep kicking around putting in my name to be a pacer for the Pittsburgh half in May. I just need to find another half to actually race this spring too. Lessons learned: it's ok to take time off. I didn't run for a little over three weeks in late spring due to some ankle discomfort and that was perfectly fine with me. A few years ago, I would have been too stubborn and try to run through it.

I just finished my last run for the year, so here goes!

December Totals
Running: 85 miles (!!!)
Walking (with my dog): 38 miles
Pilates/Strength training: 8:16 hours

2025 Totals
Running: 275.6 miles
Walking: 243.2 miles
Pilates: 21 classes in 17:21 hours (joined Club Pilates in August)
Strength: 40 activities in 14:10 hours

This is pretty fun, from Garmin. The green line is walking. Can you tell when I adopted my dog and started tracking our walks on my watch? October we went to WDW so I missed 8 or 9 days, then it got super cold and our walks got a bit shorter for a time. Now he's used to it and drags me out anyway!

Haha, last year I had really low walking totals for the first three months. Then it jumped in April, right after we adopted our dog and I got her leash trained. :)

@RuntheMouse you got your ferritin up to 73?! Tell me how you did that.
Supplements. I take an iron pill (ferrous sulfate) every other day with some vitamin c, either in pill or a glass of OJ. I keep it simple and take it on even days, that way I don’t have to think about it. I took me a year to get there from 25. My previous PCP was dismissive of my levels but my new one is very supportive of supplementing, especially with running.

Yes, took me over a year to do something similar with iron supplements. It is slooowww. I did Vitron-C iron supplement - for awhile it was 2 per day, now I do 1 per day, probably forever.

I’m staying on it until someone tells me otherwise, it’s been a game changer! Have you looked into every other day? What I read on my own was that it resulted in better absorption and my PCP agreed when we discussed it. No idea behind the why, just that there have been studies supporting it.
