It is about an old man (Carl) and a young boy (Russell) who go on an adventure to fulfill a promise the old man made to his wife (Ellie.)

there are plenty of places online that will give a detailed description of the movie including spoilers and scene by scene breakdowns.

I think reading the posts give away the bulk of the movie (and are overly spoilerish IMO)
thanks:goodvibes

My family and I loved "Up". I did cry at some parts, but I also laughed so hard that I cried at other parts. I'm looking forward to seeing it again soon and I will certainly be buying it on Blu-ray when it comes out.

They were lying in the grass watching the clouds. They were pointing out images in the clouds. One of them (Carl?) spots a cloud that looks like a baby, letting her know that he's imagining them having a baby. The other one (Ellie?) then imagines that every cloud looks like a baby, communicating that she is also interested in adding to their family. They decorate the nursery, not because she is pregnant, but because they are trying to have a baby and have no reason to believe that they cannot. They are merely excited about the prospect and jumping in with both feet. Later, they find out that they cannot have children. Never was she shown to actually be pregnant.

That's how I saw it, too. I know that most people do wait until they are expecting before they decorate a nursery, but given that all of this happened during the montage with no dialogue I think it was just a good way to show that they had decided it was time to have a child. (And on another board I was surpirsed at how many people posted that they had started to decorate their nursery as soon as they decided to have kids.)

And I also agree with DeluxePrincess - I thought that Carl just didn't look through the book after Ellie died because the reminders of the adventure they never took would have been too painful. To me that part was very realistic - I wouldn't have been able to look through it either in that situation!

My DS4 is dying to see this movie but can I ask a question first? I have read this whole thread and it mentioned that the boy is dealing with his father not being around.

Does it go into that much because my DS's dad is also busy with his new life and they rarely see each other? I don't want him getting upset at a movie.

The little girl who was behind us in the theatre agrees with you, OP. She kept saying, "I'm scared", and "I wanna go home." She was four or five or something (I don't do the kid thing, I dunno from ages; the only kid's age I'm sure of is mine: 38).

The wife and I loved it. I keep expecting Pixar to fall, but so far so good. (The absolute boring misifre of "Cars" excepted.) Sadly, they have all those sequels lines up...

Re: "Loss of baby". Wouldn't a "loss of baby" scene more likely take place with Carl's wife in a surgical gown and in a bed? I took it she was barren. It's unlikely she'd have been brought into a hospital, treated, examined, told to dress and brought to an office before they told her she'd lost a baby.

But, man, that opening choked me up.

As an adult, it took me two viewings to actually deciper it (and I'm still not sure I did completely ;) ).

If anyone has more questions about this movie, please look it up on Wikipedia. There's some interesting reading there, especially about the inspirations for the movie, and the many Disney connections it has. :wizard:

Quiz: What was the man's last name who "stole" the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from Walt?

I loved UP and can't wait to go see it again!

:yay::yay:

Without spoiling anything, he doesn't go into much detail. I got the impression that the dad had left him and his mother, but Russell was making stuff up to cover the fact like saying that "he's really busy now and can't spend time with me". As an adult, you can read between the lines.

Quiz: Where have you heard the dialog the dogs exchange while flying towards the house before???

Unfortunately, I think that is the situation. I took it to be that Russell's father had left (divorce?) and that he had remarried and had a 'new' family and didn't make time for Russell.

That was sad to me because it was so realistic.

I think your DS might identify with Russell a lot in that respect and really that could help.

That's how I took it too, especially since Russell says something about calling him, and __________ (female name I can't remember) said "you're calling too much and bothering your dad". I took it to mean dad had remarried, and step mom wasn't too fond of Russell.

I liked UP. I cried and I laughed. To me, it seemed a more adult than kid's movie. I went with DD who is 16 and had seen it once. She hates to cry in front of people, so when she told me she had cried in the movie, I knew I was going go cry.

Oh, let's add to that the kid in the film, Russell, is chased by a terrifying villain with a SHOTGUN who repeatedly shoots at him, ties him to a chair and shoves him off a blimp in a quite obvious attempt to murder a child, and dies a graphic and horrible death as we watch his face as he plummets to the earth.

OH NO!! VIOLENT SITUATIONS IN A DISNEY FILM!! I guess I'd rather watch...

Snow White: when the witch tells a hunter to kill Snow White and bring her heart back in a box

Pinocchio: when bad kids are kidnapped, turned into donkeys, and shipped off to salt mines

Finding Nemo: when Nemo's mother and siblings are eaten by a barracuda before the opening credits

The Little Mermaid: where people who don't live up to their bargains with Ursula are turned into squids

Beauty & the Beast: with a villian who also "dies a graphic and horrible death as we watch his face as he plummets to the earth"

Peter Pan: where children are rounded up by pirates and nearly forced to walk off a plank where a crocodile awaits

Lilo & Stitch: featuring a child whose parents were killed in a car crash

The Incredibles: featuring supervillians who try to wipe out super-kids

Tarzan: with a villian who falls to his death being strangled by vines

So thank goodness the other films don't include witches, dragons, evil stepmothers, evil stepsisters, sinister villians and creatures to bring on chaos and peril for the diaper crowd.

UP is rated PG. It's not for the "diaper crowd". And it certainly wasn't made just for kids.

I think I heard my DH and DS talking about this in the car on the way home last night. (It went right over my head, apparently.)

Star Wars?
Correct, it's the X-wing leader dialog from Star Wars as they're approaching the Death Star.

Tarzan: with a villian who falls to his death being strangled by vines
Don't forget Tarzan's parents being murdered by Sabor the leopard at the start of that film too.

Whew! What a thread!

Just as I don't feel the need to apologize for my opinion about Up!, I also feel that y'all that loved the film don't need to apologize for loving it.

As a pp noted, what made me hate the film made her love it! Different strokes.

As for somebody who no longer respects my opinions because of this thread, awwww, I'm hurt! :rotfl:

I'm sure Pixar's loving the publicity, positive and negative (and I have no problem with being the lonely voice in the wilderness).

It's the disboards, it's a dis movie, and I appropriately mentioned the spoiler alert at the beginning, I enjoyed reading the posts, so thanks for participating in my thread, I've enjoyed it!

I loved Up for the most part. The only part that I hated was the "taking dogs" bit. Also, wasn't the villain (whatever his name was) supposed to be 20+ years older than Carl?

I saw "Up" last night and loved it!

There were several Disney movies previewed that I want to see, one being "The Princess and the Frog".

I was very disappointed in that I didn't see Disney's "A Christmas Carol" previewed(too early?). I'm excited in that it is supposed to be more realistic than "The Polar Express".

I'm dying to visit Disney's Christmas Carol train!

Christmas and trains, a fantastic combination! ;)

I cried my way through it and I hate crying. However, my children and husband all loved it. My children never cried (my dh did) and I am not sure that they truly were able to get the greater meaning yet (10, 8, and 4). Now that I got through the first time, I will be able to see it again.

I haven't seen it yet, but I am really afraid it will make me fall apart in the theater! I cried at Finding Nemo, though, so maybe I'm not a good barometer... ;)

I cried my way through (my dh did)

Children were spared from a lot of the emotional upsets!
I cried tears of joy as soon as the balloons were released. THAT scene was amazing!

I found myself talking out loud when scary situations arose, saying things such as "Oh no", "Look out", "That's awful", "Poor thing".

How sad that Ellie and Carl couldn't have children and never saw "Paradise Falls" together! :sad1:

I thought Russell was adorable and loved Dug!
