I posted earlier that I had quit a few months ago, but have been having some really bad cravings lately. This is just to help me not start again...

I hate smoking for a purely selfish reason. To be blunt, I don't really care how many other people hate it, think it's disgusting, hate the smell, blah, blah, blah blah....I hate it because it actually controls your life!! I can't believe I did something for so long that could make me feel this bad when I stopped. it is something that consumes your thoughts. I sit around and think that I can't watch tv anymore because I liked to smoke when I did that, I can't drive anymore, drink anymore, have coffee anymore, basically live anymore!! :teeth:

Now I know that's not the case, but I believe that no one will ever know how powerful an addiction cigarettes are until you have smoked and then quit.
And no matter how bad it gets, it's almost not enough to keep from starting again for a lot of people.

I've got a lot of respect for people who have quit smoking! You are truly strong! :thumbsup2

I'm quitting on Monday. I know that it is a good thing to do but I am so not looking forward to it.

You can do this! I had to change alot of my habits when I quit. I started cleaning my house while talking on the phone because I used to smoke while talking on the phone. If you change those habits that revolved around smoking, they will soon become new habits and help break the "habit" of smoking, if that makes sense.

I posted this in your other thread (I think that was you!), but I totally get what you are saying. You don't realize until you quit how much smoking controlled your life. The sense of freedom (once you're over the hump) is so super!

When I quit, I had to change almost everything I did, for a while anyway. But driving was the hardest - you gotta drive. I kept thinking, what the heck do non-smokers DO in the car?! (answer: nothing, but you get used to it) I used Twizzlers for the car. I also spent a lot of time in the movies, it was a great way to pass the time in a place I wasn't accustomed to smoking.

I don't know if you've been to Quit Net.com (didn't help me much), but I love their slogan. "I'm not gonna smoke. NOPE!" The NOPE is Not One Puff Ever.

My personal thing was, "I am stronger than those little white things." I don't look at it so like, "I can't smoke," because I CAN if I want to. I just don't want to, and am not going to let them suck me back in! I quit a year and half ago, still have the remaining ones in the kitchen just in case!

Don't go back to it!!!! You lose all the benefits, and you'll have to go through it all over again! :goodvibes :goodvibes

Congrats!

You can do it!! Don't give in to those cravings, just keep posting here and we'll give you whatever boost you need! :grouphug:

I'll tell you what I did. I quit cold turkey. The first three days weren't that bad, but days 6-8 were pretty bad. Not physical, but just the want of a cigarette. My trick was to tell myself if I wanted a smoke at night, to wait 'til the morning to see how I felt. If I still wanted one in the morning, I'd say wait 'til the afternoon and so on. I'm amazed to say that worked for me! But you have to really not want to smoke anymore, because I was telling myself and anyone who would listen anything to get me a smoke,
but I didn't. And I'm happy, it's still hard sometimes (obviously), but it does lessen everyday!

Stay strong! :cheer2:

you can do it. I did it and so did my dh. It was so hard and i'm so glad i did it.

SO TRUE!

One thing I kept telling myself during my most successful attempt at quitting (5+ months smoke free...7 years ago) was that I would be wasting all I'd been through so far.

I've come this far, and I'm not going to ruin it for a few minutes of "relief".

I have always suggested this to people trying to quit, or stay quit. Break the day into smaller parts. Trying to not smoke for a whole day can be daunting, but a few hours is doable. After those few, you do a few more, and...... Before you know it, it is tomorrow, and another day is behind you.

You can do it, Andrea, hang in there.

Don't give up!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!

My DH smokes, and I hate it :( First because it is so unhealthy. And also I just hate the smell...YUCK!! He smells, our house smells, our cars smell!! I've asked him to stop so many times... I know he wants to, but I also know how hard it is to stop.

We just redid our house, redecorated, etc. I asked him to PLEASE not smoke in the house, because it just gets into everything. He does pretty good with our first floor, LR, DR, he goes outside. But, when he is downstairs watching tv, he has slipped into smoking down there again.

SO PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP!!!
