Just to put my two cents
Everyone who owns points at their own resort has the same opportunity to snag a prime time reservation. We are all competing equally. What we do with the reservation afterwards is OUR BUSINESS as we have paid for those points and the maintenance on those units. I don't rent commercially but I also know that it is presumptious of me to try and tell someone else how to use their points unless I want to pay for their non use of points.
If someone wants to rent a ressie at the 7 month window and it is gone because an owner is renting out his or her weeks well that is just too bad.
Buy where you want to stay. Nothing in the contract says you have the ability to use all the resorts for ever. I just sold a HH contract because I wanted more BWV points so I could take advantage of the 11 month window. As long as I'm competing equally with other owners or owners points then I have nothing to complain about. Having the ability to be a renter or a rentee truly enhances
DVC Membership and assures me that if times are tough and I don't want to sell my membership I can rent points to cover maintenance till I get on my feet again. Points have been selling for $10 per point for as long as I've owned(1998). It appears with new demand the points are now more expensive to rent at peak periods. And this is bad WHY??? It makes our membership more valuable, especially those of us who bought at the small resorts that are in high demand. I agree the planner has the BIG advantage here and the buy where you want to stay becomes more necessary. For the big resorts it will still be relatively easy to get rooms.
If the membership becomes more restrictive, who does that benefit. The one transfer rule is a perfect example. This has added to my enjoyment of my membership??? The problem was point morphing. Fix that and then everyone is on the same playing field and you can't be fairer than that.
