SO, I check the rent/trade board every so often, and lately it's just gotten insanely busy, with largely people who are not really DISers.

Who are these people? Why are they here??
What has happened? Are outside sources pushing the renting of points?

The whole thing seems unseemly to me.

Now there's someone who's trying to rent points for $16 for AKV. Huh??

I know the Unofficial Guide mentions renting points as a way to save money on rooms. Plus there is an ebook by a former CM, who considers "renting" points the best kept secret on saving money for your WDW trip.

As for renting points, I scout the board out just for the fun of it. I have seen an increase in people looking to rent points out. No vacation plans this year? Want to earn money to cover dues? Woops, forgot the banking deadlines? Or people need a little extra cash.

Alot of people look to be renting out all their points, I have seen threads with 250-300 points available. Personally I would like to see those big amounts go for a transfer, at least the points are kept in the family.

FWIW, renting points in January is what convinced us to buy into DVC.

Why should it matter if someone uses or rents their points? The points are theirs to do with what they will... :confused3

I do not think that the others are 'critizing' the renters or the rentees.

I am simply amazed at the pure number of people looking to rent nowadays. A couple years ago, I was out of work so we decided to try hold DVC for one more year and rent our points. It took like a week or so to find a member that was really interested in taking our transfer.

Now, the points are moved in a matter of minutes. A post goes up and there are like 24 responses with a "I sent you a PM!" People are leaving the phone numbers, email addys, all kinds of personal stuff that I would not list on a website. Anything, just to be chosen one to receive the points.

Crazy over on that there Rent / Trade Board, I tell ya. CRAZY! Sometimes I just like to sit back and watch the madness... popcorn::

In addition to the comments already made, there are a number of guidebooks, ebooks, newspaper articles and websites that promote the DIS DVC Rent/Trade Board.

There are definitely a lot of posters on the Rent/Trade who have not participated in any of the DIS forums previously. With the number of new posters using the DIS Rent/Trade Board it might be worthwhile to review precautionary measures before renting.

The few problems reported in the past have involved those with few or no posts on the DIS. Perhaps that should be one consideration when renting?

Reviewing past posts (I'd suggest quality rather than quantity) by those renting and asking for (and checking) references are certainly some of the suggestions regarding rentals thru the Rent/Trade Board.

Above all - Caveat Emptor!

Doc this is certainly not a complaint, just a statement of fact, with the new search feature, reviewing past posts is just about impossible. Any suggestions on how to improve that. I always wonder if I am doing something wrong. :confused3

I like to watch it too popcorn:: , somewhere there is a thread that we all sort of combined "sob" stories that desperate renter(someone wanting points) put in there thread as a reason to pay less.

Also liked the ones looking for Xmas/NYE ressies in early Dec. How many DVC owners need to tell a renter that no studios are available before they get it through their head?

I think we have a winner of the Greenban poll. I wonder what group was right? That didn't take long at all.

Piece of advice, stay away from that board. I went on there a few times and each time I left a little riled up.

Problem is they often get rooms. They post and then, via pm, people contact them with rooms they have spec. booked 10 months prior. They are able to get top dollar also at such late notice.

I could make a living on that board if I so choose. It would be quite easy and I'd never evn need to post one visable post or reply.

I would agree however it doesn't appear DVC feels that way anymore.

The manner in which you choose to rent points could cause your account to be flagged by DVC.

This is just further proof of why I tell people that you own nothing with DVC. It is a pre-paid(RTU) vacation program that is worth nothing at the end of the term. Some timeshares you actually own and at the end of the term get a buy out from the sale of the resort. If we truly owned DVC we could do whatever we choose with it. Other Timeshares encourage renting. They realize those renters are potential new customers. They will even direct you to rental sites or even rent for you.

Why am I saying this? Well, before I felt DVC was powerless to stop rentals. Now I'm not so sure and I'm not waiting to find out.

when I suggest the rental board - I sometimes forget to tell them to check the post anything less than 100 be carefully. also check when they started to post.

worst to me is a poster who has been on the board for years - but only has a few post - I consider those guys professionally renters myself and they generally want more for their points.

you are also forgetting the huge amount of lurkers on this site. I am often amazed at my little hints - that overnight make my once uncrowded places - overflowing with people. So much so that I have to find new places....

this site has a ton of lurkers.

then my family, friends and co-workers who I am sending to WDW using my DVC villa at no cost - would also lose.

I am not the only one who sends family to WDW using DVC points at no charge.

DVC would have a hard time telling which is family/friends and which is a renter.

I quite agree, I have been a member of the boards since last year and only have just over 100 posts, I noticed today someone on the UK board celebrating having just got 1000 posts, I spend quite some time writing what in the main fairly long and hopefully constructive posts though some may disagree with my point of view, posts of this type take time and thought. Posts asking "whos going in July, I am soooooooooooooo excited" etc take little thought, little time and pad the boards out with junk that many people likeminded to myself skip over with a pinch of salt. They do however add to the post tally. I am quite sure I could double my post tally in a couple of hours and probably have it into four figures in a couple of weeks if I chose to go down this route. Would this make me a more reliable person to rent from? Personally I dont think so but it is quite true that some people who choose for whatever reason to do very little research on who they are renting from and only go by someone who has a large amount of posts whatever the quality. I hope some people do check the quality rather than the quantity, if I choose to rent points out in the future I hope potential renters do check my posts, I believe they demonstrate my character attention to detail and the fact that I am of reasonable integrity. The one line soooooooooooo excited posts just dont do this and really add little value to the boards. If people like greenban, dean etc were not on these boards providing good debate I would not be here and I am sure a considerable number of less frequent but quality posters would not be here either.

Okay, time out, I think I'm being insulted.
Why does your post count and your date of joining the DIS determine whether you are reputable or not?
I've been a DVC owner since 1998. I have never rented my points.
When I bought in, I took the phrase in the literature about a the timeshare not being purchased as an investment to heart. To me the idea of renting of points makes me a bit uncomfortable, as I would much rather have owners staying in the units who will hopefully want to take better care of them, and keep my annual fees down. But to each his own... If I did, I would have you know, I am dependable to a fault.
What I do not understand is why a low post count makes someone less worthy of trust, on this board or on any other. Would you rather I just post for numbers sake? If I don't have any new idea to add to a thread, I don't feel inclined to post.
We just had a thread about being welcomed into the DIS community as opposed to being cliquish... are newbies welcome or are we trolls? Most of you have thousands of posts, at what level do we get respected?

from my view (this is mind not the dis board).

posters who don't post often are not as attached to the boards as posters with many posts.

so one of the way that Doc or the other moderators can punish you is to ban you from the boards.... okay to me that would be just plain horrible.

but if you don't post - would it really bother you?

does this make sense?

and no I am not insulting anyone. or at least I hope I wasn't.

you might be surprised at how some of those unimportant post can go - read a few now and then you might find you are posting more often.

Back to the Orignal topic off the "I am not loved trend" this thread has taken.

There is a woman out there selling an internet "Book" on how to save at Disney. And what does this LOVELY ripoff suggest? Go to the DIS and rent points. (All of her so called "insider' secrets are a JOKE!)

(And I agree, the serch is NOT working, when you click on find posts by the poster they have NO posts even if their post total is HUGE!)

I'm one of those who lurked for a few years. It would be a part-time thing, mostly to pick up pointers (especially on the Transportation Board). Then my schedule changed, and I had more time to become a full-timer, so I joined.:thumbsup2
I suspect there are many others out there who don't post yet (or rarely do so) due to their schedules, too. :goodvibes

(But now that I'm on..........:disrocks:.:cheer2: )

Not looking for love people, just respect.
And my point was that I really don't like the idea that renting is available at all, in contrast to the previosly expressed opinion that renting will bring in new buyers. I would rather see the units occupied by people who have a financial interest in them... if not in that resort, then at least another DVC member.
Back when we bought in, I didn't even know renting was allowed. I had never heard of it (1998). Again, I reference the phrase in the literature that DVC should not be purchased as an investment. To me, renting your points is like taking a cash return on an investment. I'd rather see the rooms available to another DVCer at the 7 month window if the owner doesn't want to use them.
And that is my 2 cents.

hey boardwalker dont get insulted i have been a diser since 97 and have posted very little. so i could be considered a lurker. I agree with cat. there are a ton of lurkers here .. also have given every single family member a somewhat.. free vacation using MY points and never asked for a penny. why. because i love disney. no other reason. and would never rent my points , but i would not judge if someone had to for debt reasons.
