Why has Poly gotten so expensive?

It's more than the Grand Floridian for next May!

We love the Poly and wanted to stay there again in May now that most of the construction is finished. When I was pricing our trip - I ran all the monorail resorts TPV and the Poly TPV was THE most expensive!! Why is that? It used to be the middle of the pack or even sometimes the lesser of the 3 monorail resorts. Maybe I am just way out the loop on this one but I was surprised! what am I missing here? I just ran rack rates for 5/9/16-5/17/16.

It is more expensive because it is now considered the "newest" since it was just updated.

Maybe it's just the time of year you're looking? I just ran the numbers for the time of year I'm going (July 4 week), and GF is more expensive for everything but the bungalows. Which is weird because May isn't peak time or anything so you should be getting similar results. Did it maybe show the price for Poly TPV for club level? Or was it showing the dvc studios instead of the regular rooms?

Nope! Regular TPV room. The CL was even MORE expensive!! LOL!

Oh my goodness, that's so weird! I wish I could be more help as to offering a suggestion for the why, but my mind's coming up empty.

I have to agree with you. I booked the BWI CL for the end of Feb. 2016 but wanted a couple of nights on one of the monorail resorts to start our trip with. We had never stayed at the Poly so looked there first but the prices were crazy high and I couldn't find any discounts either. We ended up booking at the GF main building CL and it was cheaper.

So we aren't planning on going until 2017 but I like to get somewhat of an idea of pricing and we have stayed at the Contemporary and The Grand Floridian so we wanted to stay at the Poly in 2017 and when I ran numbers for the time we would be going for 2017 in the 2016 prices I was coming up with the poly being more expensive than either of my trips in the past and I mean it was like 2K more, it was so weird :( hoping the prices come down a little or they have discounts for 2017

They charge what they do for the Poly because they're apparently getting it, construction, dodgy housekeeping and all. See also: The cash rental/point costs of the DVC bungalows.

Just a thought but did they lose inventory when they converted rooms and built the bungalows? I know that the room my mom and I stayed in years ago were considered theme park views wouldn't be considered TPV now due to the bungalows- they're completely blocked. And DVC completely took over at least one of the buildings that had a large amount of TPV rooms.

The Poly did get a big price increase for some seasons/dates for 2016. For example the cheapest rack rate value season Sept/Jan for standard room/DVC standard view went from $429/hotel and $439/DVC studio in 2015 all the way up to $499/hotel and $509/DVC studio. So I think they are anticipating the Poly becoming much more popular due to the refurbs. I think somebody ran the numbers overall for all the seasons and the GF is still slightly higher as an average over all rooms and seasons though, so GF fans don't need to get their feathers ruffled, lol. Both of those resorts though are now pretty absurdly priced for cash. I'll use my DVC points thank you very much.

The Poly, GF and all Disney Deluxe Resorts are so wildly overpriced because there is no shortage of people willing to pay whatever Disney charges. None of them are worth what they're charging but that doesn't stop people from paying.

I think you might have something there. When they lost three buildings to DVC, reduced inventory makes it harder to book. You don't have to firesale the entire place to fill it.

The resort has a cult like following and Disney knows this. Therefore $$$$$$.

Nope, it's loss of inventory, especially for theme park view. The old Tokelau and Tahiti buildings were the largest buildings, almost double buildings in size. Converting them to DVC took a large proportion of the inventory out. And it meant they are down to only Tuvalu as TPV. Lesser inventory means greater demand for the fewer rooms meaning higher prices partially to control demand. That's how it goes in the business.
