Why Guns?

I think that it would instill some kind of unnecessary fears in a child if the child was told the guns were for protection. I don't think its healthy to walk around feeling like you could be attacked at any time.

But an alarm system could lead to the same fears.

Ask a police officer how he or she feels about security systems. A dog would be better than a security system. All security systems do is provide a false sense of security. And you would be AMAZED to find how many past convicted crimials are employed by these companies.

My brother, a police officer, loves his alarm system and advises people to get them..He also has a very large german shepard and tons of guns..In case of a zombie invasion, I'm going to his house..
I support the right to bare arms in case of zombie invasion

Being from Canada I can own a gun (I don't ) but it has to be locked it a gun safe with the ammo(not in it) By the time I discover someone has broken in I haven't got time to get it out of the safe etc.
I have a dog and I have signs in my window that says Guard Dog on Duty. Most of the houses around us have been broken into and we haven't. We also leave lights on outside all through the night (energy efficient of course), timers in the house etc.

Maybe, but I don't feel the need to explain why we have alarm system to my kids, because there is no way they could blow their heads off with a keypad.

I think it's fairly clear from the writings of Madison, Jefferson, Hamilton and many of the other founding fathers that they'd be horrified at how much power we have allowed the government to assume. Getting rid of the right to bear arms goes against everything they argued for.

OK, maybe I just don't get your point. At the time these quotes were made, weren't we as a country fighting for our independence against an entire country as a united revolutionary force? Isn't there a major difference between then and now? I'm talking about individuals having the right to own guns meant solely to inflict injury upon other individuals, not countries protecting their nation against tyranny.

Thank you for your apology. I should clarify my stance, my opinion is concerning handguns( and any other gun used by criminals), not the hunting or target shooting guns.

But my target shooting gun is a handgun. I just choose to shoot targets with it, but it could also defend my life.

The same with my rifle. It is designed for target shooting, but could also stop an intruder.

I forgot to add that ALL handgun owners should be shooting at targets regularly!!

I thought guns were useless against zombies?:confused3 ;)

My BIL is a police officer also, has an alarm also!:thumbsup2

I still think its crazy to own a gun w/ kids in your home.
If anything, I think that it teaches them to be fearful. You cannot control everything that is going to happen in life, the chances that a "bad guy" is going to come try to hurt you is very, very slim. I don't want my kids feeling like we live in some kind of bunker! Thats just me.:goodvibes

I grew up with a gun in the house and neither myself or my sister ever felt that way. Of course my parents never made us feel like we were living in a bunker. Maybe that is the distinction. Your parents can influence you a great deal and if they are the ones running around all paranoid and making their kids feel like they are living in a bunker then they will grow up being fearful.

Gun owners are not paranoid and don't instill fear in their children. At least none of the gun owners I have ever known have done that.

So how should children of law enforcement feel? :confused3 Just curious as ours seem pretty darn well adjusted and not fearful of life.

Do you really think the guns back then were not used as personal protection from their neighbors or criminals?

And, we will always need to protect our nation from tyranny. That threat isn't obsolete. IMHO

you don't have to explain why you have a gun either, they don't even need to know its there ;)

we own several guns. dh spent his career in the military, hunted his whole life and shoots targets and clay pigeons etc. we don't feel the least bit unsafe. My ds and I also know how to shoot. He knows there are many guns in the house, but all but one are locked in a huge safe.

I'd have to say he sleeps much better at night knowing that IF someone broke in, we could take care of ourselves ;)

Everyone has their own opinions, mine is still the same.
I'm just glad not everyone has a gun, I would have been terrified if my old neighbor had one...then she would have been running around her lawn naked at 2am screaming at her husband while ARMED!!:scared1: :rotfl:

With or without out a gun that sounds pretty scary!! :rotfl2:

No. At the time those quotes were made (and there are plenty others to go along with them), they were creating the framework for a new nation and basing our government on principles that remain relevant whether it's 1790 or 2050. The war was over and they were focused on creating a government that avoided all the worst of governments throughout history.

In fact, Thomas Jefferson went much further to say that violent revolution is necessary every generation and that : "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Who distinguishes the purpose for gun ownership? The government?
