Why does my son like to collect rocks?

Not just boys. When my DD was around that age, she did the same thing. I used to have to empty all her pockets before putting her clothes in the laundry. She's outgrown it.

Kelsea has collected rocks for a long time. Just last year she was taking them to school and selling them a quarter a piece and those kids were buying them.

These were just regular rocks off the street that she thought were pretty.

My son at age of 12 still will occassionally find a rock that he likes....and into the pocket it goes.

I'm still finding rocks in DS's room he collected at that age. He's now 15.....I try not to go in his room too often:eek:  He also used to collect railroad spikes.

My DD (5 yr old) collects rocks ALL the time. Everywhere she goes, if she spies a cool rock she just has to have it. Our mini-van has a tendency to be full of rocks in her car seat pockets, the cup holders, the floor.............

And she keeps all of them in a Winnie the Pooh trick or treat bucket in our garage.

My dd never did that, but I think that's because she was afraid of bugs when she was that age (and even now at 9 yo:eek: ).

LOL! Laurie, I love Kelsea's little business she had.:teeth: I bet she sold a bunch of those regular rocks.:) I probably would've bought one from her too.:p Especially if she had a sale on them like 1 for 25 cents or 4 for a dollar.;)

My 8yo DD brought home a back pack full from one trip  She has also collected them and sold them. I did make her refund money to some of the kids, it was when we were at camp. She sold them to a few adults too but they understood they were making a donation.

My twin sis still collects rocks, only now she really does buys most of them. One of the stops we always make in Montana is a rock shop :p

DD does this also. She got some sort of Smithsonian thing that you chisel pretty little rocks from and had a ball! There are rocks in all her 'treasure boxes'. It drives me nuts!

Shannon-

Rocks for sale, 4 for a dollar, tons of colors and shapes, dirty and clean ones.....come and get them while they're hot. Save on shipping with multiple orders.
I take cash and checks!:D :D

LOL, my dd was just like this when she was little. One time our neighbors across the street relandscaped the edge of their yard near the road and put all different color rocks in a pretty pattern there. The next day I had to walk my dd back over to their house and make her put all the rocks back that she had taken the afternoon before!

I used to collect rocks, I have no idea why though. At the time it just seemed like a good thing to do.

Sounds like a budding geologist....:D

I loved collecting rocks!

Brenda, shhhhhh.;) My ds might find out about that thing.:p How many treasure boxes does your dd have?:)

Heather, there's a place near here that has some kind of unusual rock formation. Several colleges come up here to check out the rocks. Something about these rocks aren't normally found in this area of the country. My ds likes to stop by there sometimes.:)

Aahmom, I remember collecting crystallized rocks (especially the pretty pink ones:) ), but my ds loves the dirty ones (dirtier the better:confused: ).

Keli, did Ashli ever try to take those rocks after you made her take them back?:)

Nicole, you don't take cc's or Monopoly money?:p Define hot.;)

Janette, I like the shiny stones you can find in those rock stores.:) I don't think I knew you had a twin though.:) Does she like WDW too?:)

Krisu, how many rocks did he collect?:earseek::teeth:

Jamsmom, you mean my ds might not outgrow his rock obsession?:)

We still collect rocks from places we've visited (I'm 50).

I used to have a 'pet' rock called Rowlf in a cage on my desk at work (just for fun of course)!

You never know, an interest in rock collecting now could lead into a career in geology later on.

Kelsea has collected rocks for a long time. Just last year she was taking them to school and selling them a quarter a piece and those kids were buying them
I'm sure Kelsea will go far! :)

My DS now 11 has collected rocks for years. And as he has aged and grown, so have the rocks. Now, if he spots something interested off the road he wants me to stop and get it, LOL.

browneyes: Noticed you are in Ga. Where is the unusual rock formation you were talking about, located? Might be an interesting adventure for DS and I.

nd little girls too...Mine collect rocks, feathers, buttons...I think anything that creates clutter is fair game.

Methinks your DS gets that from his "Aunt Twinnie." ;)

:teeth: I should've known.;) I'd love to hear about the magic green rocks.:) I might have a story to tell you about my brother and rocks when he was a younger.:teeth:

When my DD was little she would bring in small rocks she'd picked up from the driveway. She'd always give them to me, saying "aren't these pretty?" She never really wanted to save them in her room or anything like that, so later, when she wasn't around, I'd pitch them back out to the driveway. After she was grown up she mentioned she knew I did that. I honestly don't know how she knew though, as I never pitched them back until she was either gone or asleep!!

rocks are cool:D Every year my kindergarteners set up a "rock museum" . One year they set it up outside near the playground. Anytime they found a cool looking rock they would add it to the " museum display". What was nice was that the older kids didn't disturb the display-some even added ti it:D
