Why does everyone put up plain white Christmas lights?

Ha! We were just talking about this the other. I remember when the all white trend first started. I loved them!!! They just looked so pretty, simple and elegant. I actually started thinking the colored lights looked tacky next to them. Fast forward a few years to two weeks ago. We were driving through the neighborhood and noticing a lot more colored lights. And they looked so nice. The all white trend grabbed a hold and then everything started looking drab. So, now I'm all for colored lights again. Or more specifically a better blend of white and color.

:goodvibes We have multi-colored lights everywhere inside....outside we have these gorgeous BLUE lights. :goodvibes

I see a lot of blue lights in our neighborhood and it reminds of me of the old blue light special at Kmart. :rotfl2:

Two Jewish families I know both put up the blue lights...I just assumed that when I see a house with the blue lights that the owners are Jewish....do people use the blue ones as Chistmas light too??

I agree. I grew up with colored lights. Some people decorate with them well, very festive, colorful. But others, it seemed to be too mish-mashy & a color nightmare. When the all whilte look came out, it was elegant, snowy, unifying & peaceful. You could hardly go wrong decorating with it. But now that look has become boring. Bring on the colors again! :bounce: :jumping3: :Pinkbounc

Yeah, we're only one of three houses that do the color thing. White is boring for me!

I use white on my house but when my kids were young we did color. I think it is all about what you want and like .
We are looking into buying a house in the development that our Country Club sits in , we looked at the rules of living inside "The Gate" and one of the things on the list was that you MUST use white lights only and no yard displays that were not on the list bawwhahaa . I guess no plastic baby Jesus for anyone there cause he was not on the list ?

I am talking about those strands that have rows of like 10-15 tiny white lights hanging down, giving the frost hanging over the roof look. They are a cinch to put up, take no creativity, and are boring (when every other house in the neighborhood is doing the exact same thing).

Ahhhh...I see where you are coming from now. I'm not a fan of the icicle lights, myself, either (white or otherwise). The very first year I saw them, I thought they were cute. The next year, everyone had them, so I didn't like them anymore. :rotfl: Although we do have white lights this year, they are not the icicles. :flower:

Our house has the big bulb colored lights all the way around the roof line. It is very festive. The first year my husband put them up I was a little embarrassed, but I have grown to love them and wouldn't have it any other way.

are you my neighbor? THey have the most.....colorful house of the block...no. THey have the most colorful house of the state. They have the house lined in white, the trees in blue, a giant xmas tree that blows up when they come home. Then they have these huge candy cane round things that go up and down their drive way, they go up and over the drive way its hard to discribe. They are like a big U stuck in teh ground that you can drive your car under. There are 5 of those. Then they have a sleigh with reindeer.(wooden). and then the drive way is outlined iwth lights that blink all the way down her drive way. on both sides, in sync. You think if they hit 88 miles an hour going down that thing they will travel through time.

I remember back in the late-80s and early 90s when the "white light" trend had started. People started doing it because they thought it looked more "refined" and "sophisticated." Well, that just bugged me to death! To me, it's all about color and festivity so I have been a rebel since then and REFUSED to do all white (although I do think it looks nice here and there). I guess it just bugs me when EVERYONE does it.

IMO, the white lights are more classy. The colored lights can take on a tacky look if they are not done up nicely. My tree is prelit with 700 white lights. I think it's beautiful.

Call it a fad, but I think it's just laziness.

Huh??? Our house is all white and I assure you we weren't lazy. We spent the same amount of money in white lights as we would have colored and we spent a good 5 hours outside putting everything up. Now... I could never ever have a Christmas tree with all white lights... go figure :rotfl:

On a side note... I told DH that I think I will be hitting the after Christmas sales tomorrow morning to pick up everything we have in color because I think I want to do color next year :teeth: .

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
