Why does DHS have such terrible food?

IMO the problem with the CS at DHS is there is nothing "Different".
As you indicated later in your message, the ABC Commissary does have "different" options:

Chicken Curry - with rice $6.49
Cuban Sandwich - served with apple slices or plantain chips $6.69
Asian Salad $6.49

When you go "different" you have to expect that fewer people, overall, will appreciate them, so it isn't surprising that you happen to not be happy with these choices there. However, I submit that that is just a coincidence, and that it is just a coincidence that you have found acceptable "different" choices at MK.

Now, comparing either MK or D-HS to Epcot or AK is off-kilter AFIAC: Both Epcot and AK are deliberately themed to be exotic, so you should surely be able to find substantially more "different" options at those two parks.

I don't have a problem with the dining options at DHS. Pizza Planet has decent pizzas/salad if that's what we're in the mood for and the ABC Commissary has plenty of choices. I frequently read about the Sci-Fi as being a place people primarily go to for the atmosphere and they overlook food that at best is mediocre, but that hasn't been my experience. We've eaten there at least 4 times that I can think of and all 4 times were good meals. We have also had good meals at Mama Melrose and 50s Prime Time. To me, places like the Sci-Fi and 50s Prime Time Cafe are a big part of what makes Disney, well, Disney! There are plenty of places I can go to have a really good meal, not many places I can go for an immersive, themed experience.

See, I think MK has the weakest options for dining, esp full service.

I agree with this 100%. Crystal Palace is ew, Tony's is bleh, and CRT is not worth it. Liberty Tree is okay for lunch but that's it.

I very much enjoy the Brown Derby. I've not been to the other restaurants in DHS other than a counter service restaurant that wasn't anything special. It met my expectations though because, really, what more do you expect from the counter service restaurants than marginally decent food?

well. thanks for all of the opinions. it should be interesting to try and meet the needs of 5 kids, 3 vegetarians, 1 seafood eater and 3 meat eaters!!!:rotfl2:

i think counter service for lunch might be the best option. i guess we could split up to meet all of our needs too! i would be happy with fresh and tasty food. doesn't have to be healthy but fresh is a must!!! by the time we go in jan 2010, food at DHS menus could be changed again!!

seems like there is enough to choose from and we could always try a restaurant at a hotel for dinners too.

I didn't read all of the responses. I've always HATED DHS counter service, and have avoided it at all costs. On the last trip, we really needed to eat at the park, we were starving. So, we went to Backlot Express. They had a grilled vegetable sandwhich that was REALLY good. The kids and DH were happy with their food too--- so I guess we finally found a CS that's not too bad.

We have eaten a few time at H&V and enjoyed it. I like Pizza Planet but DH isn't crazy about it. We tried SciFi dine in last year on our anniv trip and enjoyed it so we are taking DDs ther on this trip. We had lunch at the ABC commissary in Dec too and that wasn't bad. Ate at MamaM's 11 years ago but DH isn't a big fan of Italian. We did it as part of the Fantasmic seating.

Our fave CS is....Cosmic Ray's! and AA in Epcot is our second fave with the toppings bar.

Honestly, I don't know what kind of food people are expecting in the parks? We've been to several different varieties of amusement parks around the country (including local (Omaha & Lake Okoboji), large regional (Des Moines & K.C.) and national chains (6 flags, two different locations)...Disney park food beats all of these by so far there is no comparison. Disney's cost is not that far out of line with other park prices either. JMHO. Anyway, we actually like the food at DHS...these are our favorites so far.

Starring Rolls--de-lish bakery items, at around 11:30 or so they have a few very, very good deli-type sandwiches they put out (a wonderful turkey on foccacia bread.)

Min & Bill's Dockside...we like the apple pretzel...a soft pretzel with an apple-strudel like filling (nice quick breakfast-y type item.)

We liked Rosie's All American--thought the double cheeseburgers were wonderful & fries were also good. The packaged desserts were similar as you get all over Disney parks, but ours were fresh. DD (19 yrs. old) liked the pizza at the place next door.

We liked Hollywood & Vine...wonderful selection, hot foods hot, cold foods cold, everything kept replenished. Dessert selection lovely. Messes cleaned up as they happened. Service good.

I like 50's Prime Time and found that to always be good
We recently tried Sci Fi and it was eh

Their counter service seems to be kinda blech too

HOWEVER, last year we did get pizza at pizza planet and I thought it was good
and in February we are near the backlot tour and had a good bbq sandwich (at least I think that was what it was, I guess it was good, not memorable)

We'd read how awful the food was at DHS, but in all our times at the park, we've never had a problem.

Our family must have bad taste in food...:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
We have always enjoyed DHS eateries. This year we are trying
Brown Derby and Mama Melrose for the first time. We thoroughly enjoyed Scifi and 50's Prime Time the DH and DD put those on the "had to do" list for this year too. :thumbsup2

I think you'll enjoy Brown Derby, and I hope you'll enjoy Mama Melrose. Neither is guaranteed to knock every diner's socks off, but we think they're fun and enjoyable. We do Brown Derby every year.

Oh, and -- 50's Prime Time's on our "must do every year" list, too.

(I'm thinking we'll have to trim that "must do every year" list soon, or we're never going to be able to try new restaurants! :rotfl: )
