Why does DCL allow smoking?

That IS weird that smoking is still allowed on cruise ships - especially in a time where smoking is being banned everywhere else, even in many public parks and fairgrounds. Perhaps soon this will hopefully change and it'll be banned on cruise ships as well. If someone has an addiction to nicotine, they can just as well wear a patch or use one of those e-cigarettes, can't they? Perhaps Disney cruisers should start up a petition? To get it banned outright or at LEAST relegate one SECTION of balcony rooms as the smoking rooms. Why should people with smoke sensitivities have to always be "on guard" against smoke? They're not the ones who made a choice to have sensitivities.

I fully agree! All we can do at this point is make DCL aware and that this is the new norm for ships that have verandas. Non-smokers are the majority.

How very classy.....

Carnival's Spa Suites do not allow smoking on the balconies.

And here everyone thinks Carnival is the pitts. I guess that's one thing they have in their favor over DCL.

I stayed in a spa room on Carnival in Feb/Mar. Anyway all of them are supposed to not allow smoking INSIDE the cabin, but the spa level even moreso because they want their spa and massage rooms to smell nice. Pretty much says it all.

(PS I still think CCL is kinda crappy and won't be giving them any of my money unless under extreme duress. That aside, what is worse is that I got off their Dream and 1.5 weeks later, IT got stuck and had to fly passengers back home, and that was too close to call, after all the ribbing we got about going on CCL after the Triumph...)

The following cruise lines are some that outright prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies: Azamara Club, Celebrity, Crystal, MSC, Oceania, Princess, Regent Seven Seas

Princess changed their policy relatively recently, and has an interesting FAQ about it on their web site:
"For all voyages departing after January 15th, 2012, Princess Cruises will prohibit smoking in passenger staterooms and balconies. This policy change reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our passengers who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the passenger’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our passengers, we feel this change will enhance our onboard experience and do more to help our passengers escape completely."

I can't believe it took 8 pages before someone got around to mentioning that other cruise lines DO ban smoking on balconies. Thanks for posting that info and FWIW, I loved my smoke-free balcony on Celebrity Silhouette three months ago and will be enjoying another one on Celebrity Reflection next March!

"Extreme duress"?? Who is ever under extreme duress to take a cruise?

Smoking is not allowed inside ANY of Carnival's staterooms, but it's also not allowed on spa suite balconies.

I was only joking, but seriously, at least that doesn't cause cancer, unlike second hand smoke.

Seriously, is there ever going to be a time in your life that you're going to spend so much time around second-hand smoke, that you'll get cancer??:confused3
How long of a cruise are people taking?:confused:

It doesn't matter how long the cruise or how little you believe the exposure to second hand smoke is.

United States Surgeon General said:
There is No Risk-Free Level of Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that breathing even a little secondhand smoke poses a risk to your health.

I'm surprised its still allowed for safety reasons. :confused3 Someone is smoking on their balcony then falls asleep without putting it out properly..not a good thing to happen anywhere, especially on a cruise ship.

I believe we were talking about getting cancer.

And I've already stated that I do believe that there are certain individuals who are at a risk from even a small amount of smoke. But this does not apply to the general public, only those who already have compromised respiratory or heart problems.

But that's neither here nor there. The point is, it's allowed. Most smokers these days are really very aware of the others around them, and do their best to try to not be a bother.

I am seriously not arguing with you, but I'm curious....why especially on a ship?

Okay....I have a question, and while this has happened to me, I've not ever had the chance to ask the person why they feel the need to do this....so here goes....

If I'm in a designated smoking section, why do some people feel the need to walk by and start "pretend" hacking?? :confused3:confused3 Or waving their arms around and complaining about the smoke? Or any number of the other things non-smokers do?

I don't drink, but I also don't walk past people sitting in the bars and lounges and make noises about them being drunks...or whatever.....

Perhaps because, unlike adults sitting at the bar drinking, the smell and presence of smoke legitimately bothers the non smokers passing by. Not enough to pay attention to smoking areas, mind you. But enough to mention.
I grew up associating early memories of my grandmother with smoking smells (she has since quit) and the smell alone doesn't bother me personally. My DH is quite sensitive to the smell and it nauseates him.
Even with that, when I run laps and there were people smoking (outside the smoking hours) I was hacking up a lung. Apparently smoke fumes and running don't mix.
I don't know.
I'd be fine if the ship was non drinking and nonsmoking, but I understand they have decided that it is more profitable to allow these in there places on board.

.

Respectfully, what you believe is not more credible than what the surgeon general reports. The surgeon general report doesn't qualify those statements by saying that only certain people are at risk. And that's just ONE report from ONE world health authority. They all draw the same conclusions. It's beyond scientific debate or dispute. Second hand, side stream, and third hand smoke is a health hazard to everyone who comes into contact with it voluntarily or involuntarily.

You earlier balked at my comparison of smoking to drunk driving and claimed that drunk driving kills far more people than second hand smoke. I invite you to verify this fact for yourself: drunk driving kills just over 10,000 people in US each year. Second hand smoke kills 49,000 each
year.

It IS an epidemic regardless of smokers desires to protect their "rights". No one has the right to subject others to harm.

With all due respect, why book a vacation that allows you to be in a closed proximity to smokers if you feel so strongly about it? Smoking is allowed on the ships at this time, plain and simple....if you have true concerns I would advise searching other options. If its just a gripe, say your piece and move on. Life if full of compromise.
