Why does anyone purchase direct if available resale points are cheaper?

I was wondering what the advantages are of purchasing direct if you only want to use points to stay at the resorts? Aside from not being able to book anything in the Collection, are there other perks you lose by not purchasing direct?

Currently, the only restriction is in booking outside of DVC & RCI.

Both of our contracts were purchased pre-opening. We would have had to wait several years for resales to become available and drop in price.

My view is that the main benefit to purchasing direct is it is easy and fast. All other benefits can come and go and should not be relied on or influence your decision in a material way.

Resale is slow and can be annoying (sellers backing out of contracts, sellers not getting their paper work in, Disney ROFR the contract, etc). The main benefit for buying resale is that it can be a lot cheaper.

*they don't know anything about resale - just the shiny pictures and videos that the guides show them
*if they have heard of resales, the guides tell them scary stories about the risks of buying "used" contracts
*they want the cruise, etc. options even if they have to pay through the nose to get them...

What he said. :)

In addition to what others have already posted -

Some purchase direct because Disney will provide financing. Resale purchasers must provide their own financing.

Some purchase direct to have the option to use points for Disney cruises. It may not be the best economic value, but some here underestimate the attractiveness that option has for many members.

For us we purchased direct because we wanted Bay Lake Tower and at the time there really was no option but to buy direct. Also keep in mind that prices can vary greatly over the years for a DVC property. When we purchased at BLT I paid $94.00 per point direct (now selling somewhere around $140-$150 direct and $90.00ish on resale)

In addition, the ability to get the exact number of points and UY that you want.

In addition to what's been mentioned already, some other reasons to buy direct would include buying a contract for a resort that is extraordinarily hard to find on the resale market (VGC) or if you want to buy a small contract at a certain resorts. Contracts for less than 100 points can be hard to come by (though not impossible) on the resale market. you have to be ready to pounce quickly if you see one that you want.

But for the most part, if you plan to use your points at the DVC resorts, you can save thousands of dollars by going the resale route.

Sometimes resale is more expensive then direct.
All the resale contracts that fit your need aren't a good deal.
It's Tuesday and they wanted to buy direct because they don't care about it being a little bit cheaper.
Free cruise!

Wow! Such great information! Thank you!

This all really helps. I think I will end up buying direct. I like the idea of the previous year's points and quicker sale. Also I'm thinking of waiting until my October cruise to book to see if there are more incentives offered.

Thanks! :)

This..I own at VGC and only want points there, in my use year, in the quantity that I want. I am curently on a waitlist that will probably be between 4-6 months to come through. I am also buying this last batch of points to make an even inheritance for my kids and don't want one kids' points to not be able to be used in the same way as the others.

Why do people buy direct? Other than what has been mentioned it is likely most people who buy direct do so after the presentation while at Disney and do not even know of these boards or the resale market when they purchase.

We've bought both ways. Our reasons for buying direct:
1.) We bought in 1993. Don't even know if resale existed then?
2.) We bought a small contract that we just could not find via resale.

If you're elmc, you get stuck with a slow contract that has SEVEN owners, one of whom is in bankruptcy and the court has to sign off on the deal as well as the other six owners. Yeah, that could put a damper on a vacation you want to take next month.

Or if you're doug, you lose FOUR contracts to Disney after tough negotiations.

:rotfl2: Sorry guys, but I have to laugh because it's just so bizarre it borders on the ridiculous

Learn as much as you can before you buy and remember that nothing is free.

You should buy the resort that you really love, not the one that they will try to talk you into. You also need to buy the UY that works best for your vacation patterns.

Disney spends thousands of dollars training their sales people and all they do is sales so they are very good at what they do.

Actually both of those were Doug. Mine just got delayed because the seller took close to two weeks to sign the contracts and another month for the closing documents. And no worries, it's all good. This is what we sign up for when we buy resale.

Now that being said...we closed today and I made my ressies! :cool1: Total time from offer to reservations: 87 days. But for 100 Jun BLT for $80pp plus closing and 1/2 mf with all 2010, 2011 and 2012 points...I'll take the extra wait. :)

1. Direct is alot easier, the decision is whether or not you are willing to pay more (alot more) for the convenience.
2. I agree the restrictions did not take away economically sound trades, but they did take away the ability to trade into very appealing vacations. (I could rent my points and pay cash for my cruise, or I could pay $1000 more and avoid the hassle of renting. Those who buy direct aren't going to think twice about that decision)
3. Less uncertainty about future restrictions, not complete confidence just less up in the air.

Bottom line, not everyone who buys direct is uneducated about the resale process, they may have just picked the path of least resistance, like me. :)

However you buy in, wishing you lots of happiness with DVC!

but we didnt know you could buy resale until AFTER we got back from WDW in 2010 & buying 160 BLT points.
But we are still so happy with that purchase, and it made me confident to buy VB 60 points last month.

we have used it for BLT, aulani...so I think we are getting our $$$ worth ....

We are from Australia, so the idea of timeshares etc is a tad foreign to us..I claim ignorance....but not any more :thumbsup2

That's correct, also no cruise purchases via pts. either on a resale. I didn't find it took that long to buy resale. In fact it closed within a couple of months, as promised and we were in no real rush. For the cost of it, resale is totally worth the short wait. Of course if you want to cruise (many claim it's isn't worth it anyway) or want to use the Collection, the direct is the way to go...it's a personal choice!

You also still get all the member discounts regular DVC members get - free parking at the parks, discounts on dining etc. etc.
