Why do you live where you live?

cheap, cheap, cheap...that is 5 years ago.....now a booming land sale for folks from California
wife would be bed ridden if she still lived in oregon...sunniest place on earth the cure
rent is out of control in Oregon
snakes..lots of snakes

Because it's amazing. Great schools. Great weather. Plenty of jobs. Lots of great restaurants and shopping. Lots of outdoor recreation. Multicultural communities. Close to the beach and Disneyland. What else does one need?

Could have never been able to afford a home in the northern/central part of the state so we bought our first home in the early 1980's down here and have been here ever since.

Because location, location, location. Close to nature and city, fabulous parks and recreation, abundance of shops, restaurants, and community events. Nationally ranked for schools, safety, and diversity. Lower cost of living and improved weather and traffic over where we came from.

We live in the same town/village that my husband grew up in. His parents have always lived right around the corner and his twin brother lives just down the road. All of our siblings live less than 15 minutes away. It’s one of the best towns in our area. Excellent school district, little to no crime. Population is about 1200 inside the village limits and another 2400 outside. It’s like living in Mayberry.

Years and years ago my husband and I got lost on the way home and decided to just roll with it. We ended up passing through a town we'd never heard of or been to before but were INSTANTLY charmed. It was our top place to live but we didn't think we could ever afford it.

Then the pandemic cancelled two disney cruises that we had paid for way in advance and we suddenly had a lot more money than we had planned on at that time, an opportunity opened up and boom we had a downpayment and now we live in our dream town :)

The specific town came down to luck and timing, mostly. We needed a bigger house right when the market crashed, and of the places that were on our list for having decent schools/a good family-friendly vibe, this town is the one still full of big old farmhouses from the days when families were larger. So here we are, and here we'll stay at least until DD13 is off to college.

The broader region is a matter of family ties. We've talked many times about leaving but my mother needed me here, and now that she's gone, it is hard not to think about how close MIL might be to a time when she needs help as well. We may still move out of Michigan someday, especially since 2 of out 3 kids don't intend to stay in the state and DH's boss periodically brings up an out-of-state advancement opportunity, but that's a conversation for somewhere down the road.

Well considering we have gotten 9” of snow in less than 7 hours and it’s not supposed to stop until Thursday, I’m not quite sure today why I live here. But most days I would say my husbands job. He has a job that pays him extremely well and any job that he’s been offered elsewhere has been a huge pay cut. We are hoping to get some things paid off and move within the next 10 years but we will see.

Job in 1997. Was debating a tanger, but I met a boy … now my husband.

We have considered moving several times - even went on a search last fall, but this area is cheap and we like it enough to stay for a little while longer until dd is finished with high school.
