Why do they put children's Christmas specials on at 8:30 on a school night?!

Gosh, am I the only parent who would just let them stay up and watch it?

:confused3 that what we always do--when we were kids we couldn't record it so we got to stay up late to watch it on TV way back then too.

Okay, I have to admit it... We're probably one of the few families in America that don't have a DVR!

I told DDs that since it's a new show it should be on again. I hope so!

I couldn't live without my DVR. I don't know how you do it.;)

That said we were watching it at my mom's and dad's place because it was his 70th b-day. DD did not get to bed till 11 last night. Thank goodness she has a half day today.

Also in central time and it was on at 7:30.:thumbsup2

I would have too

Totally agree OP. The Grinch was on from 8:30 to 10:00pm last night. Someone is definitely not colouring with a full box of crayons IMO:rolleyes1

Keep in mind that the east coast is a head of the rest of the country--Grinch was on at 7:30 at our house. See the post from the person in Colorado. What time does school start for your kids too?? Most of the people I deal with on the east coast don't start work until 9:00 either. Our kids START school at 7:30, most people start work by 8:00 or earlier.

You're not alone. I don't have a DVR anymore either. I do miss it, but when we moved, I refused to pay the $16/mo Comcast wants to charge me for it when I can watch everything I miss on the internet which I'm already paying for :).

I let DD stay up to TRY to watch it, but she fell asleep which I knew she would do :(

Our high school starts at 7:20 and (this is *really* off-topic, sorry) the traffic today was BRUTAL getting there, I guess there's standing water on some roads from the several inches of rain we got last night. The traffic was so bad they announced over the PA system (as we were pulling onto the property) that the kids who were tardy today didn't have to go to the office and get a tardy slip (so they kind of were awarded a group "get out of jail free" pass).

I was glad about that because DD would have to serve a Saturday detention if she had one more tardy in a certain class. They have block scheduling of an A Day and the next day is the B Day. It so happens that she's been late twice this year...but both tardies have been this quarter...*AND* for the same class.

agnes!

I usually let my dd stay up & watch the specials in bed with me -- it's special (my dh makes popcorn for us too). Last night my dd was sooooooo tired that she had to go to bed earlier than usual so I DVR'd it and the kids are watching it now.

You are not alone! ;)
I might even let them eat ice cream while they watch it!

DS (nearly 6) stayed up to watch it last night (while eating strawberry ice cream). It's only a few times a year, and he will be fine. His normal bedtime is 8:30, so we start reading/brushing teeth/winding down at about 8:00.

Not sure whether they have actually done it but there was an article in the news about stores no longer selling VCR's.

Now what are people supposed to do when there are no more VCR's for sale and all you can buy is a DVR that won't work until you sign up for some monthly service?

When I was growing up, most of the childrens' shows were on between 4PM and 8PM. Now they also had tons of toy commercials then, including some deceptive ones for example for a voice operated "Robot Commando" that looked like the Incredible Hulk but wouldn't do anything until you also pushed a button on its remote.

Make sure they brush their teeth again.

In addition, for many kids, after finishing their homework (perhaps after some after school sports), they don't have time to watch the show at all and still get enough sleep.

Well, from a television exec POV--prime time is 8pm eastern and later and the world does not revolve around the Eastern Time Zone. Kids specials usually are between 8 and 9.

In the olden days, we'd record it with a VCR. And if it was on too late, we sucked it up and missed it. They do make inexpensive recordable DVD players as well.

Using a PC, video card, and some software you can build your own DVR. No service needed.

There also are a few DVRs that you can purchase that do not require a monthly service fee.

DTVPal DVR - $250 (Sears exclusive)
Moxi HD DVR - $500 (cable only; CableCARD rental from cable company required)
TiVo HD DVR - $600-$700 (over-the-air or cable, or both; CableCARD rental from cable company required if you want to use it with cable).

Depends on the kid.

When I was younger I could stay up with the best of them and still get up and go to school. My older sister could not. If she didn't got to bed at a certain time there was no way of getting her up the next day.

Even though I was younger, there were many nights I would be up watching TV with my mother while my sister was off in bed.

There are still plenty of VCR or VCR/DVD combos available on Amazon.com

Blank VCR tapes are becoming a "little" harder to come by, but a few years ago my DD and I purchased three 30-gallon trash bags full of blank video tapes for a buck..:thumbsup2

:santa:

My kids CAN'T stay up that late. They are usually begging me to put them to bed by 7pm most nights, and its a fight to keep them up till 7.30. They are 3 & 4 and usually get up early in the morning, anytime between 5am - 6am.
Personally, I think putting specials on after 7pm is a terrible idea (for us at least), but thankfully we have a DVR in 2 rooms, so they watched bother Charlie Brown and the Prep and Landing this morning.

It's a special show then we just let them stay up as long as they aren't to hard to get up in the morning

For specials like this, our girls were always allowed to stay up and watch them. Now our granddaughters are allowed to stay up. After all, Christmas only comes once a year.

That seems to be a funky thing (to me, at least...normal for you of course) in the middle of the country. By the time things air on the west coast, it's at the time it was shown on the east coast...so Prep/Landing was on at 8:30 our time.

My brother does own some Tivo units, but he uses his PS2 as his main DVR.

We homeschool and I'm at home, and DS's bedtime starts at 9, so later shows aren't a problem for us at all. We also have DVR service with our digital cable.

But we turned off Charlie Brown last night b/c it was awful! I used to enjoy those shows? Ugh! Even my son was bothered by Charlie's mood.

Gosh, am I the only parent who would just let them stay up and watch it?

I would, but my little guy has ADHD and if he doesn't get enough sleep (has to get up at 6 am), he has a really bad day the next day.

We watched Mickey's Christmas carol, Winnie the Pooh's christmas and then A Charlie Brown Christmas last night so the girls aren't missing much. I let DD7 stay up 1 hour later than usual (until 8:30) but I just couldn't see letting her stay up even later to watch the new Disney special. Neither of our girls function well when they don't get enough sleep. DD10 had to finish her homework so she didn't end up in bed until 9:30.

I hope the new one is on again soon!
