Why do people say DH, DD DS & DW?

I vow to never use a D again. I'm scared to now!

Yeah, and we should also be scared to use ellipses, say "hello" to our DIS friends, etc etc... I figure if someone wants to get their panties in a wad about a D, that's their right (and not saying that the OP is doing that--oops, that would be original poster--I'm too lazy to go back and see the name of the OP--I admit it, but it's only because I have been drinking too much coffee and have to use the restroom... ).
