In those situations (and yes I've been caught by them too), you back out of the thread and remember the title so you don't ever open it again. YOU are in control. YOU can choose whether to continue reading or not.Sometimes you simply can't skip over them because the TMI part doesn't rear its ugly head until halfway through the post.
For example, the thread on the Disney For Families board right now about the pregnancy. My first thought after reading the beginning was CONGRATS, AWESOME, FINALLY! Then the part about the other kids being in the next bed during it just hit you like a train....didn't see it coming and there is no stopping it.
Other threads, yes, by the title you can tell whether or not it should be opened. Ex: periods
If you have no problems surfing channels on your TV and changing the station if/when something objectionable comes across the screen, then you should have no problems finding another thread here that won't skeeve you.
And before someone asks:
skeeve
(verb) to gross out; to digust; to make your skin crawl, sometimes with undertones of sexual deviance/perversion
It really skeeved me out when he ate the gummy bear off the floor in the movie theater.
or
Twenty-year-old guys who date girls too young to drive really skeeve me out.
I also don't get people who tell the whole Dis exactly when they are going to "try". Of course to each their own on that topic.
