Why do people leave shopping carts in the parking lot?

:rotfl2: They could probably charge an extra $100 for valet parking LOL. Why are all Costco's parking lots a madhouse? :confused3 There is always a line just to park!

That's why I insinuated in an earlier post that going to Costco is like a date for me and my husband. Next thing you know they will have a bouncer and a red velvet rope at the entrance and only the "pretty" people will be let in. Which means I will probably have to start dressing up on these 'dates'.

Rogue Cart damage- NEVER heard of this til this thread. Maybe that's because I've always driven clunker type car and wouldn't notice if a rogue cart had made it's mark.

It's something I care about because when careless, thoughtless people leave their carts scattered about in the lot they have a tendency to crash into cars causing damage. If you don't care about rogue cart damage, then so be it.

Yeah, well, I don't go around labeling people over what they do with their shopping carts. I do care about dings in my car but again, life is too short to be so concerned with material possessions that I get ticked at other people about it. I have a child. HE matters to me. I would totally judge someone and get VERY pissed if someone did something careless that hurt him. Some people get more irritated about things like rogue cart damage than they do about caring for children. I just don't have the emotional time to go 'round worrying about grocery carts; it's not worth it. SO many more important things. LOL, I think this is a funny(odd) thread because it's as hot a topic as spanking evidenced by your 'careless, thoughtless people' statement and others. When I came back tonight, I was suprised to see it still had life.

A lot of people have the ability to multitask. ;)

I guess I must be one of the lazy people. I don't walk to put the cart away. In the handicapped parking in front of the parking is a space that is open between two parking spaces and I place the cart there. I walk with a cane. I use the store's motor cart while shopping but they are not allow out of the store so I have to use a regular cart to get to the car. Sorry if you think I am lazy but you try living with the pain I have. Believe me if I could walk any distance without hurting I would be more than happy to put the cart away.

Sandy

What about the other handicapped people that are trying to park in the space after you and CANNOT get in the space b/c of your cart.:confused3

I think you are making an excuse....if you were in that much pain, how you could you even leave the house to go shopping? Sorry to sound so harsh but this is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves. I have congestive heart failure and need to park in a handicapped space, and this has happened to me before. Someone's cart or motor cart is blocking the HC parking space and I end up having to park far away from the enterence which is hard on me too.

:rotfl2: They could probably charge an extra $1000 a year for the "right" to valet park LOL. Why are all Costco's parking lots a madhouse? :confused3 There is always a line just to park!

Hck, that is why I pay an extra $50 to upgrade the membership. I get there right when it opens for us special people so I have no parking issues. It is kind o like paying for a fastpass. And ummmm yeah...I would buy a ast pass if I could.:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I feel lots of stress on this thread. ;) Perhaps some might like to move out to a more rural area. You won't have congested parking, waiting in line for parking spaces. You'll find lots parking lots never filled to even 50% capacity. I'm sorry though, you will have to carry your own groceries.

And really, no one will care where the cart is left. Honest. You could even push it home if you wanted to. Just bring it back next time or else that's considered stealing.

Man, I don't think I could live in congested areas. Too much stress in life it seems.

One more thing, you'll fit in nicer without a shiney new car. Something practical and most likely used. Something that does well in the snow. And face it, your car is going to be dirty, so its ok if its got a small dent or two. But I've never gotten one from carts. Doors yes. Carts, never.

After reading this I called my brother. He owns insurance agencies all over the state. Not 1 claim has ever been made to any of his offices due to rogue cart damage in the 20 years he's had his agencies. Before this he worked as an adjuster and again he said he never had to look into rogue cart damage. DB said a cart would have to be moving awfully fast or deliberately pushed or accidentally driven into or backed into for damage to occur.
MUCH more likely, it's that the damage comes in under any deductible and potential claimants don't want to risk increased premiums, or cancellation, by filing claims for damage for which they'd have to pay the entire cost to repair, anyway.

Pouring down rain in Florida in the summer (perhaps almost as hot as hell?) with a newborn and a 2 yr old...yeah, that would be the one of very very few times I've pushed mine up on the curb/tree planter thingy and not gone down to the end of the row the next aisle over.

Me too. I almost always put my cart away, but will admit to a few times in the pouring raining propping it on a curb so it wouldn't roll and leaving it when I had an infant with me. (No, I would not leave an infant unattended in a car.) I also remember doing it once when I was post surgical and thought I wasn't going to be able to make it home if I took another step.

I have no such excuses right now so I always put my cart away.

oops double post

I guess I'll take this opportunity to add that I HAVE heard of rogue cart damage and have known of people who had it happen. That's why I make an effort to return my cart. However, I'm willing to admit that there have been times when my own issues (infant in the pouring rain, a grocery trip too soon after surgery, etc.) have simply taken priority and I've simply tried to secure the cart in the closest area where it appears safe from rolling.

I can add that I worked service desk at a grocery store for some years and never had anyone come in to complain about cart damage either.

I've never known a person with cart damage. Damage from doors parked next to cars is MUCH more likely and common.

I would LOVE for someone to find some statistics on all this rogue cart damage. :rotfl: Frequency and average dollar amounts.

I'll be honest. I think some people are stretching this just for the sake of debate. :rolleyes1

13 pages about rogue carts? Unbelievable. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I am so glad you posted this. I am going to try to be aware of this when I shop, and if I see a cart parked in a handicapped space, I'll move it to the cart corrale. A little common courtesy goes a long way!

I NEVER return the carts to the Corral.

Years ago I was Christmas shopping with my wife. I loaded up the car, and she went to return the cart. I never seen her again.
The Police told me that 99.99% of all criminal activity that takes place in Store parking lots, happens at the Cart Corral. Most always that is where your towns criminal element commit their crimes.

The other reason is Real Men dont use carts!:3dglasses

none of the above is in any way, shape or form... true. I just wanted to join in on the merriment of this thread!:upsidedow

Sounds like a good grant project! Earmark, anyone???

If it's a downhill trip I ride the cart. If it's not someone gets paid to take it back. Who am I to deny someone a job in this tough economy???:confused3 :confused3

Lot's of people here stressing over where to park. We usually park at the furthest most spot away from the store, so I never really stressed over where to park. As I walk through the parking lot to the store I remind myself of how many days till the next trip to WDW, and remind myself how much walking I will do in the park. I then look down at my slightly overweight gut, and the walk isn't far enough. :thumbsup2

I read an article once about a homeless woman who left over 100 buggies on the top of a building. She would push the buggy back to her "home" which was a bench on the roof of a skyscraper (If I remember it correctly) and she never bothered to take any of them back. If I remember the details correctly it was several blocks away. It took them weeks to get them all back once they found them. They then installed some sort of barrier to keep it from happening any more. It was a story I read many many years ago, so any of it might be inaccurate, but that's how I recall it at least.
