Why do people hate the Proud of your Honor Student for Bumper Stickers?

It is natural to be proud of a child for making honor roll. Sharing that sentiment on a bumper sticker or telling others (grandparents and close family members excepted) is bragging and/or attention seeking.

Tell your child that you are proud and reward him. That seems sufficient.

Years ago I had 2 bumper type stickers on my back windshield of my brand new truck. No Crybabies and a Pride Flag. Someone scratched a great big cross on the side of my truck, I was pissed, but I didn't cry about it! :lmao:

I don't hate them, but it's something I would never do. I have two honor students and just don't see the need. I admit to having a bad impression of people who have them. Everyone is proud of their kids, regardless of whether their accomplishments are sports, academics, social, working hard to meet their IEP goals, etc. Although I don't have bumber stickers, if I did I'd rather it just said "proud parent of an Ajax Elementary School student"

It's just like I tell people my children "enjoy playing in the band" etc. rather than "my child is first chair in the band" etc. It's really about the mindset of whether it's appropriate to brag or not.

I agree.

And to be honest, right or wrong, I get the impression that those who do sport them tend to think that "honor roll' = 'such a smart kid' = 'what a great parent I am'.

Personally I'm not any more impressed with the kid with a 4.0 gpa than I am with the kid who's a gifted athlete or the kid who volunteers at the local soup kitchen. I just hate parents who put academic achievement at the top of the totem poll, sometimes at the expense of all else (not saying that people with those bumper stickers all do this....just saying that's what it makes me think of).

(and fwiw..my kids are on the honor roll so this doesn't come from a postion of defense :) )

I agree with this, although I am not a fan of bumper stickers in general.

I think they're silly, and my daughter is on the honor roll. She knows we're proud of her, and that's what matters. Honor roll students are a dime a dozen. Sure, it's great that a kid is on it, but honestly, I don't see it as a major accomplishment in life.

It is sufficient but my child asks me to put it on my car so at her request I absolutely would do it. I'm not bragging or seeking attention at all but and I am extremely proud of my girl, we just got a letter saying she can move into our GATE program at her school....

I dont have a bumper sticker, our school does not give them out. But they do publish a list of the kids who do make the honor roll. The star athlete is many times in the paper etc. People post these things on FB... I dont see the difference. People do brag about their kids in all areas, I think if the bumper sticker had anything to do with sports no one would care but because it is academics, people do not like it. Would you care if they wanted to put your child's accomplishment no matter what it is, sports, music, academics etc in the paper? People see it and now know what your kid has done.

I have one child who has always made honor roll, and another that it will be probably a struggle. I am proud of both kids for their accomplishments, but there is no way I would want to dimish the making of honor roll, at our school that is not an easy thing to do.

It is one thing to not like bumper stickers at all and another thing to hate the message.

I still dont see the big deal

I hate them because I think they are just too darn small, some people may have trouble reading about the accomplishments of my genius children, who happen to be on the HIGH honor roll, thank you very much. I am looking into a custom banner made to cover each side of my minivan, since both my middle school aged children are smarter than everyone else who makes it on just the honor roll, I want the whole world to know it!!!!

Or, I could just take them out to dinner and tell them good job. It is such a hard decision.

wow at my kids school it is not easy at all to make Honor Roll, you have to have a 95 or better in every subject and have no discipline issues. It takes a lot of hard work for these kids, I think that is a major accomplishment!

:cutie: I don't think anything about them on someone elses car but for me I have them and will keep them but I don't stick them on my vehicle. Its just not my thing and my daughters feel the same way.

I do think the newspaper is different as it's presented as a one-time community interest story as opposed to the bumper sticker that continues to remind the world of your 'smart kid', day in, day out, week in, week out.... for as long as you own that car LOL

And personally I do think people would have as much to say about a bumper sticker that said "my child is captain of the basketball team"; or "my child got a gold medal in his swim meet". Talk about obnoxious LOL

meh, there are kids that aren't on the honor roll that work just as hard.

I'm not a bumper sticker fan period.

MTE.

That's one reason I'm not a fan of bumper stickers. You have a 50-50 chance of someone disagreeing with you (on anything) and there are nuts out there that will vandalize your vehicle. It *shouldn't* happen. Ever. But it does.
