Why do people buy milk and bread is snow is predicted?

About 15 years ago, I was driving from FL back to IA. (I grew up and learned to drive in Sweden and had only lived in Iowa in USA--so I am an excellent snow driver). During my drive from FL, AL got a huge snow storm and the interstates were shut. I had my trusty front wheel drive Ford Tempo (and my handy paper map) so I continued driving toward my destination at a speed slightly under the speed limit. Keep in mind I was the only car on the road.

Not far down the road was a police car in a ditch. I pulled over and explained to the cop how to dig out his tires (got out some cardboard), and then drove the car out for him. I then proceeded to give him a quick lesson on how to safely operate his car in snow--seriously he followed me for miles. I can't remember what town it was, but the guy said he had never driven a car in snow (he was a younger guy). Nor had he ever seen that much snow.

It was the funniest thing ever. Little me, with my Tempo, coming to the rescue of the big police man.

So after that experience, I want you all to know, I hope you all stock up on groceries BEFORE the snow comes--it will keep the roads safer for me.

Another thing to consider about all of this is that certain parts of the country just don't have enough equipment to deal with the snow. Areas that regularly get heavy snow are better equiped to clear roads. I can totally see how snow would really cause problems in the south because some of those towns may only have one snow plow to clear the roads. Even here in Kansas, it took our snow plows 2 days to get to all of our streets. And it was less than a foot of snow.

Oh, and I hear you about the ice causing a mess. It's only 8 degrees right now and the combination of cold and snow on the ground has done something to my satelite reception on our upstairs tvs. It has to do with the wires outside. So I am on day one with no tv. At least we have power and internet though!
