Why Do Men Have To Back Into Parking Spaces?

Both spots aren't gone - you just back up into the first spot and let the other person into the one you were trying to pull forward into.

I don't know why Walmart or grocery stores would be any different. I always back into spots including when I'm at these places (unless I plan on having a lot of groceries to put into the back of my SUV).

No, I only meant that both spots are gone when the person pulls all the way through and doesn't back up -- that happens all the time at Walmart! By the time I'm able to drive around to the other spot, someone has taken it.

As to why Walmart parking lots are different -- they're just busier, that's all. I wouldn't want to aggravate people by taking the time to back in.

I like backing in, because it makes it easier when leavimg.
It took me years to be able to do it,
And it took even longer to back in between two vechicles.
Im ot an expert, but Im not afraidy cat either.

I mostly back in. My DH taught me years ago that it is much easier to get out when there is traffic. Now it's just a habit.

one of the things I love about my new Chrysler, when I put it in reverse, the side mirrors tilt down so I can follow the lines in the parking space and see the stupid bumps or curbs in spaces that have them...

Wow....nobody told me 'bout that feature! :flower: At times I'd love to trade this little car in and get my old sled back! (Pontiac Grand Prix) ::yes::

I am a woman and my preferred order of parking is this:

1. The Pull-Through spot, this is awesome

2. The Back-In. I always back in when I can.

3. The Front-In. This is often easier, but I HATE being parked this way. HATE it.

4. The Parallel Park. This is the absolute worst. I would rather walk 10 miles to my destination then parallel park. I cause too much of a scene while doing it. LOL.

I don't know if the newer Chryslers have it

early year Chrysler 300M's have it..I believe they removed that feature in the

Regular 2002 model year, but kept it in the 2002 300M Special..

I have to remember to turn it off for the winter though, one of our club members forgot to clean the ice off of his mirrors before putting it in reverse and broke the mirrors, when they tried to tilt down..

I know that's not funny, but..... :rotfl2: Sorry.

Another woman driver here who likes to back in...
Actually, when I'm driving Big Bessie our full-size beast van, I shoot for pull throughs. Always. I could hit a small car with that thing and never know it....
But when I'm driving my Passat, I'll back in whenever possible. I, too, have issues with peripheral vision--gosh, it's hard getting old!--and prefer to back in so I don't have to worry about seeing what's around me when I leave. That didn't sound right. You know what I mean.
My husband thinks the whole pull-through idea is just silly. But he rarely drives Big Bessie. And when he does, we get a lot of curb action. Ah well...

Not a man here :wave2:

ALWAYS back in, whenever I can. We live on a main street, so if I don't back into my driveway, I'm HOSED trying to get back out.

That behaviour just carries over when I'm out and about and parking. I'd rather take the extra few seconds and back in, as it makes getting out, much much easier.

Aren't they heated?

I always back in if its a spot when I can. Meaning- any parking lot, just not a pull up spot on a street etc. My dad was a trucker, and well thats just how we did things. i also dont EVER use my rearview mirror unless my car is going forward. There is a reason you have 2 side mirrors, and as my dad would say- they dont lie, if it looks like your gonna hit it you are, if it looks like your gonna make it you are.

With any truck i've driven and owned, its MUCH easier to swing it in backwards than it is forward. Even the passat, I'll pull past and back in. My blazer, I back in as well, and that is 100% safety related, I cant see kids behind me, even if they're the grown adult type ...forget a little Mazda or Honda!

I know that all men don't do this, but I see a lot of them. They take the time to back into a parking space. I never back into a space. I always pull into it. If I am in a parking lot and I can pull straight through so I can just drive forward out, I will do that. I never back in. What's the point? If you don't back in, you back out. If you back in, you pull out. Are you preparing for a quick getaway? Just curious.

:confused3 Don't know why....but my DH does it all the time!!

My DH is terrible at parking my van and backing in is just as easy as pulling in for him. I hate it when he has to park because he has to keep backing out and adjusting, but when he does it he turns the wheel the wrong way and ends up in the same spot. I'm not talking about a 15 passenger van, but a Montana that we've had for 5 1/2 years. I don't know what his deals it, but if I say anything then he gets mad and says, "do YOU want to drive"". Uh, yeah, I think I do! :teeth:

I got into an accident in a parking lot because of someone backing into a spot. I was waiting to back out of my space and leave. A pick up truck drove behind me and pulled completely into a spot. I assumed he was parked and backed out. As I did that, he backed out of the spot he had just pulled into and hit my car. If you are going to back into spots, I wish there was some way to signal it so other drivers know what you are doing.

In the "old days" that was they way that many companies who had safe driving courses for their employees who use company vehicles taught the employees. I was taught by my father (30 years ago to drive), to always back in when possible, which gives you better visibility when leaving a parking space - you know the times when you park in a spot, only to come out and have an SUV with tinted windows parked on either side of you so you can't see what's coming until you have backed half way out of the space!!! I hate when the happens, and it always does if I don't find a space I can pull through or don't back into a parking space!

I do it too.

One reason the front of my car looks sooo much cooler than the back.
Reason two, sooo cool just to pull straight out.

At our complex, when my DH comes home, he ALWAYS backs in to his parking spot. I always just pull in. THen when we take my car, he says it feels strange to back out of the parking spot. I think he feels more comfortable driving forward out of a spot, rather than backing out. I don't know -- maybe he backed into someone a long time ago and maybe that's why he always prefers to back into spots now. Me, I can't stand backing up. I feel like I'm going to hit something.

You know, since moving here to Texas, I have never in my life seen so many people back in. Most are women. Of course this is in the school parking lot when we pick up our kids.

It is safer to pull out that way & we can be assured of not backing up into any children or cars. It really is safer when you pull out.

Oh and most of us have big SUV's & trucks. It is actually pretty easy to back in.

I drive a huge truck, and it is way easier to back it in to a parking spot than to try and turn into one.

Now parallel parking - completely beyond me :)
