Why do I want to add on when I don't *really* need the points?

So why is addonitis so powerful?

We have 170 BCV points, and we are happy :cheer2: . We can probably only go to WDW every other year, so these points are good for that. But I am constantly thinking about adding on :wave2: . I added myself to the waitlist for 25 BCV points back in April, got the call in June, and at that time, finances were tough and we had just purchased a resale timeshare in Orlando, so I said no thanks. But I was sad, and I still am sad :(.

Now it's September, and I might get a part-time contract job, and the first thing I think about is, I should call my guide and get on the list again! And I don't even have a definite on the job yet!

Am I crazy? I should be paying off my 0% credit card bills, paying preschool tuition, and saving some money. Instead, I am really close to calling my guide just to get on the list, in case something comes up in a few months, and maybe by then, we might be in a better financial position to buy points. Since it may take 3-6 months or more, this idea seems reasonable to me. Plus getting a few extra 2006 points with little or no dues (Feb UY) would be nice, if anything became available before February.

However, we don't really *need* the points. I would *like* more points, because I love my points  . We could always use them to bring family with us, or stay for a longer period of time, etc.

Would our $2500 be better spent elsewhere? If I buy 25 more points, will I just keep wanting more? Does addonitis ever go away? :confused3 Will staying at VWL for Thanksgiving this year only make the disease worse?

I don't know why, but I wonder if people who don't read these boards add on as much as we do. I think it's the Disboards :teeth: (gotta blame something)!

Bobbi :)

Same here! I am chomping at the bit to add on. Especially if we get a DVC at AKL or the Contemporary.

I totally understand!! There are only three of us and we own 200 at SS. Well, I got the bug and just bought 150 more!! I just love it so much-sure I could have spent themoney somewhere else but my kids are 5 and 7 and we have so many years of great memories we are going to make!! Of course, I can say it's for the kids but I know it is just asmuch for me!! I just love it! I am always thinking about my next trip. I like to have two trips planned at any point so that when I am down there I always have one to look forward to!

There is no cure. We were bitten badly as well. And staying at another resort will only make the situation worse. We bought into SSR unseen. Stayed at BCV. Bought thru Disney. Stayed at BWV. Bought a resale. Stayed at Hilton Head. Added on thru Disney. It's terrible!!

We're booked at Old Key West this Christmas and I hope we hate it! I can't afford any more contracts!!

I think the thrill of planning is partly fueling us. We love these boards. We love TourGuide Mike. We love planning meals and dining reservations. We have trips roughed out through the summer of '08. Basically - we're hopeless - AND WE LOVE IT!

I heard this at the DVC AA meeting:

"Hello, my name is xxxxxx and it has been xxx weeks since I last added on to my DVC contract."

Okay, so basically it is hopeless then :teeth: ? Should I just call my guide today and get on the list? I think my DH might protest, but he doesn't have to know until the points come through....

Or, I can stop reading the boards (!!!) or cancel our VWL stay...

And even though our freezer/refrigerator at BCV was totally broken during our first stay there, we still loved it! On some other vacations, having all of our food spoiled and it taking 90 minutes to check-in when no one was in line might sour our opinions, but it's all that magic everywhere! It's like a happy happy drug!

Does anyone have anything better to do with $2500 :) ?

We have 270 pts at SSR. It's probably at least 100 too many for us, but I constantly think about adding on. Do they make a pill for this?

Found this somewhere else some years ago and believe it may help explain the add-on problems:

"Disneyitis (Dis ney i' tis) n 1. Condition related to the uncontrollable desire to return to the World. Subjects with this condition are known to frequent note files, web pages, and newsgroups. Only known relief is a trip to Walt Disney World. There is no permanent cure....and no cure is being researched as those afflicted don't WANT one! Has also been known to infect Disneylanders. People who suffer from Disneyitis have also been known to spend an unusual amount of time at their local Disney Stores to temporarily relieve some of the symptoms associated with the disease. They will also tape, watch, re-watch, and re-re watch Disney videos, specials, parades, vacation planners, etc. Also will subscribe to Disney Magazine, and will read every brochure on Disney they can get their hands on. They will sport hats, coats, jackets, pants, and carry bags with Disney logos. Can't go more than one full year without going to the world without becoming overly agitated. And no matter how many vacation days they take, they always seem to get ticked off at everything one or even two days before they have to leave the world and go back to the rat race."

It is quite possible that this condition has altered and now inflicts DVC owners. Possible treatments to manage the condition include resales and add-ons. :rotfl2:

Ha ha! I think I might be asking my question in the wrong place...no one here is going to say to NOT add-on, we all have the disease :rotfl: .

Well, the good news is that I refrained from calling our guide today. Instead, I made 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies :) .

I might call her next week though, depending on how the week goes. When I have a bad week, I am dying for a vacation and want more points!

Thanks for all the, er, encouragement to indulge myself!

Disneydenisel - it's comforting to find out that I'm not alone. I'm not even a "real member" (passed ROFR and had final closing documents sent to DVC yesterday, but not in the system yet). I haven't even booked my first Welcome Home visit, and I'm thinking that another "50" points (read 100) might come in handy! Does anybody know when the next meeting is?

My name is Scott and I think I might have a problem . . .

We bought a contract from DVC and our guide got us a reservation a couple of months out. Bought a resale shortly after. Then added on while on our first visit when we met our guide in person.

DisneyDenise, It is not just you! I started with VWl this March then in June added BWV's, Wed I called the Timeshare Store and added BC if it passes. Today, I told my husband and he said, No more! I can use these when I bring the family. We stayed at BC in Aug and just loved it.

I'm in the same boat... for whatever reason I think I need to buy more points, although I don't really know that I'd ever use them. I think I've been able to talk to sense into myself and figured that when a new DVC is announced (if it's one I want) then I might add-on enough points for 5 nights in a studio and then sell one of the other contracts... But who knows, I've already got my points spent for this year and next year...

Wow, it's nice to know that I am not alone. I think my best bet is to wait for this job to materialize, then get on the list. I'd be sad again if my guide called to tell me that there were points for me and I had to turn them down again. So I'll just have to be patient. I certainly have enough points right now, but the more I read these boards, the more I want for my very own. People are passing ROFR every day or adding on, it just makes me want to buy points!

Oh, I just need more income. Then I'd have at least 500 points and my own private jet to take me there from CA! I can dream... :wizard:

I'm sorry that you will be dissapointed with the OKW accomodations. I mean, they are only the biggest room accomodations of all the DVC resorts. Plus, they don't let you park in a lot far away from your unit! I mean, you actually have to park right in front or near your unit.

Plus, they have the audacity to actually give you several conveninent stops for the Disney buses in the resort along with a nice restaurant (Olivia's) and couple of shops. I mean, how could you possibly fall in love with the original DVC (and only 'real') resort that there is? I mean, sitting on the balcony overlooking the golf course as your sipping your favorite morning beverage or eating a snack.

Sheesh...I'm sure you'll have a horrible time. ;)

Thanks ArnyVee - Based on your description of all the "horrible" parts of OKW, I feel much better. I need to be strong! I need to say NO! I need to at least wait until they announce all their future plans....maybe then just a little one.....maybe somewhere....

It's not "Disney-itis"............it's a "Disnease"! IMHO, "itis" means "inflammation", something that may be temporary, or even go away by itself, where as "Disnease" is chronic, with only temporary relief coming in the form of occasional add-ons! :lmao:

Unlike the rest of you, I actually NEED more points!! ;) :teeth:

We just got back....we used this years points.....we used next years points....What are we supposed to do????? :confused3

Ooba, it sounds like you could really use an add-on fix! Are you on the go every other year program like us? When we bought, we said that we'd go in 2007. As soon as I had the points, I reserved 2006 :teeth: . Uh oh. Now we say we can't go until 2008 since we used all of our points already, just like you. So I either find some money and add on, or we have to wait....or transfer points...

What are you going to do!?!?! I keep wanting to phone my guide!
