Why do folks sell DVC?

I'm 100% constrained by the school schedule and I already used my "poor man's Marriott" to secure a trade at Marriott Lakeshore Reserve in a 2 bedroom checking in next July 4th (just got it within the past week) believe it or not.

that's a great trade! i'd like to try that resort soon but haven't gotten it yet. i'm trying the royal palms in the fall since it was easier to get a 2BR there and they have recently renovated their rooms.

We mainly trade into Lakeshore. You can get it if you use OGS and also watch daily. They do big bulk bankings regularly.

I've heard good things about Royal Palms too :)

tug2.com

That site will teach you everything you need to know if you spend enough time on there.

Watch out, though...the "poor man's Marriott" trades will spoil you for anything else;) We didn't start thinking seriously about selling DVC until we started getting 2 and 3 bedroom Marriott trades regularly at some high-end Marriotts. That ruined DVC for us as there is just no comparison for us.

Interesting... I have not been impressed with the Marriott.... IMO they are better than the older DVC property, but VGF, VGC, Alunai, BLT are much better.

If I could comfortably afford 10-14 days a year in the Garden Wing Hospitality Suite, at Disney's Contemporary Resort, then I would sell my contracts. However, I do not think this will happen anytime soon :rotfl2:

Thanks for the website. Any particular forum on the site to check, or just start at the Help section? Sorry if this is dense, just really intrigued with these travel options and would like to expand a little. Saw the thread on the retired gentleman spending 2 years (and working on 3) in nothing but timeshares really piqued my curiosity on these other timeshares.

Thanks everyone!

that is probably true of the older marriotts in orlando, but i would bet lakeshore would compare favorably to any DVC resort in everything but location.

i would start by doing searches based on what you are curious about.

i like to read on the marriott board to see what is going on with marriott owners even though i only trade in to their resorts, for example.

It is so much nicer than DVC in my opinion. We love the location too as we are Sea World passholders too. Oh man I love Lakeshore. I want to be there right now!!!

The one I frequent on TUG is sightings/distressed, but you need to pay for membership to see that one. Once you are trading, it is so worth the $15 a year or whatever it is to see that board. I have gotten the most amazing trades thanks to people posting on there.

Otherwise, I look at Marriott since I trade a lot into Marriott, the Interval and RCI boards when I have specific questions, and occasionally the DVC board. I think there is a board just on timeshare trading on there? I would read any stickies at the top of that board. There is so much knowledge to soak up. I've been doing this for a decade and I still learn so much from people on TUG2!

One caution I would give about researching timeshares on discussion boards. Most of the boards I have read do not have the traffic or the diversity of opinion that you find here on the DIS DVC boards, and they tend to focus on negatives more than positives. Because there may only be small numbers of very vocal critics, many other boards distort the real picture by being focused on concerns of a few which don't apply to your family at all.

Specific to Marriott, a few years ago they began the transition from being weeks-based to a points system. That change is highly controversial for many long-time owners of Marriott, so you will hear a great deal of negative comment about that aspect of Marriott. Although many Marriott owners may not like points, you may be perfectly fine with a points-based system. Without a huge volume of posts like you have here on the DIS, those negative comments may give you a bad impression of the whole system, when in fact, the issue of points may be completely irrelevant to your family.

What might be much more relevant to your family regarding Marriott is the number and location of their resorts, the resort quality, and the cost of ownership and use.

Similar issues can skew the discussions about other systems. For example, Wyndham has a truly sleazy sales organization. They really do; the sales force is a very negative representation of a fine company.

So when you go to a Wyndham board, you will hear a lot of complaints about lying sales personnel. Worse, you may hear that Wyndham (which is headquarted in Orlando) has an "F" rating with the Orlando Better Business Bureau. You might be appalled and not consider Wyndham as a possible alternative. But if you buy resale like you should, the stupid antics of the Wyndham sales weasels are irrelevant to you.

For a guest however, Wyndham resorts are very nice places to stay. Again, the locations, quality, and cost of ownership and use are much more relevant than negative comments -- no matter how accurate -- about sleazy creeps you will never meet.

All very true! I try to stay out of those discussions about Marriott conversion to points, how sleazy Wyndham sales reps are (I figured that out on my own my first stay on my resale points...I had to unplug the phone to get them to leave me alone!), etc. I already know I'm buying everything resale. I'm mainly interested in asking questions about how specific systems function. Sightings tends to be my favorite board over on TUG2 now, but if I have a very specific question I go to the board for that timeshare system and ask.
