Why do FL residents get better discounts.

I live in Wisconsin, I sure wished I lived in Florida.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but why do Florida residents get better discounts at WDW, and now I just saw they can get better rates on a Disney Cruise. I know there has to be a reason that Florida residents get these discounts. I suppose the tourist season knows when it maybe a slow time, and they depend on the people that live in the state to visit the parks or take a cruise.

About the only free thing to do, or discounted days, is once a year when they allow you to go to a State Park for free, or go fishing without a license I think that is a Sunday in May.

Otherwise our tourist area's make you pay full rate for everything, there is never a Wisconsinite discount on anything.

Just one of the great things about living in paradise :teeth: Really though I think they offer us deals to bring us in during the low seasons as we are closer and might be willing to take a long weekend if the price is right.

OhMari, Although FL residents get discounts to WDW, I believe there are certain blackout dates.

::yes::

In addition, Southern California residents get discounts at Disneyland in the off-season.

Remember the cost of living is so low in Florida. I've known many Florida residents that never go to the parks because it is too expensive to do so.

With a substantial discount, this gets these consumers that would not normally do so.

It's not just Disney, it's most of the attractions in the state that offer Residents discounts. The reason? To drum up business during the slow seasons, especially the long, miserable summers.

Because they know with these discounts they can suck every last penny out of our bank accounts!

Oh my, did I say that out loud?

My guess is that those who are really Disney crazy have annual passes. I'm sure everyone who lives in Florida doesn't, but I'd imagine there are many that do. Disney then puts out deals where you make reservations in the off season and you get a free meal plan. Because you must purchase a plan to get that deal, it excludes many Floridians simply because they don't want to purchase passes twice. IMO, they put deals out there for most of us at some time of the year or other. It's our choice to take advantage or not though.

Exactly!! There are many permanent residents here that have never even gone to the parks simply because of this. Also they "USE" us to fill in during their slower less profitable times, there are usually very few discounts during the major holidays or during the summer when the parks are full. I used to live in Door County Wisconsin and I know your pain about the discounts up there, but I also know that tourism in most of Wis is usually a seasonal thing and many of the tourist traps are closed during the off seasons unlike here where the weather is good most of the time!

because we deserve it for everything we have to put up with living here! :)

- but seriously - they want to fill the slower times and how easy is it for Floridians to drive on up and spend a weekend here or there...with what some pay for airfare we can go for two to three long weekends.

I'm glad a Florida resident spoke. My aunt and her family live in Palm Coast, and have lived there for about 8-10 years.

They have only been to Universal once in these 8 years and never been to Disney! Due to thier location, its not advantageous for them to get a hotel (about an hour drive) but with thier work schedules they also have a hard time getting out there as well.

But if Disney and other establishments offer resident discounts, they will get new consumers. These new consumers will get hooked in and Disney now has a new customer.

Cost of living low?!!! You're kidding right? We make way less than we did in the NYC metro area. Sure, we were able to buy a house, something we wouldn't have been able to do up North but our groceries are just as much as everywhere else(meat is more expensive,) so pretty much nothing else is cheaper except our housing and that's not even really valid any longer.

Why do we get discounts at the theme parks and other tourist attractions? It probably has something to do with making up with us after clogging up our highways so much! ;)

the cost of living is low here? where am I missing out? we make the same salaries we did in Illinois, and we're sitting on a golden throne here. when you factor in housing, it's a wash. and what discounts are we talking about? $100.00 off of an AP? the 4 Play hopper ticket went from $99.00 to $119.00 for a 3 day no hopping overnight. and the resort rates are nothing special. I don't think WDW does enough for FLA residents compared to the other parks here. but it's not just the parks, we get discounts all over due to the tourist economy. in the off-seasons, you can do very well showing you FLA driver's license. but not at WDW.

I recently got into a confrontation with an obvious tourist recently because he was smoking in a queue. he 'informed' me the only reason we can afford to live here was because of tourists like him.

you can't win, no matter your stance.

I agree (even though you're a Cane!!)

tourists seem to think we owe them!
Unless you live in a tourist town you really don't know what it is like...especially during "Season"....which I wish we could all get a license for!

I don't even want to go on about the trials of dealing with everything - I would get banned for sure!

I think that they must have meant that salaries tend to be low in Florida therefore residents get discounts so that they can afford to go. I don't know about that but I can imagine that Disney and other parks want to lure locals in during offtimes so they offer them good discounts.

Well cost of living is low compared to my NE prices. In Florida, housing is less, groceries less, and taxes are lower.

So to me it is lower!

Also the salaries are lower, and more lower paying jobs in the tourism sector. Many people live on a lower wage structure.
