Why didn't I buy two pins?

On July 2 I bought a limited edition Goofy 4th of July pin on the Wonder. I was pretty happy about it. To this point I have only bought pins that mean something (although I got a lot of different DCL pins to make a collage at home). I noticed there was a limit of 2 per person, and some people buying 2 for every person in their party, but I just got one.
Well that $6.50 pin is going for $20 and up on EBay! If I had bought more I could have paid for the other pins I got!
Lessons learned, I guess!

I know how you feel! We bought a Mainstreet Electrical Parade farewell pin in 2001 for my son's collection. When we got home, we found those pins going for up to $85 on ebay!

But then think of all the people on the cruise who would have liked to have the pin to remember their special trip by that didn't get a pin because of all the ebay sellers....

Ok, I confess that I bought more than a couple of the Aritist Choice pins on our Oct. '02 cruise. They still had some at the end of the cruise, I wish I had bought even more. Sorry, Cruise, you're not making anyone feel guilty. Any limited edition cruise line pin is a super trader. With the ones I bought, I have been able to trade for some really great pins, including some of the other DCL Artist Choice pins. Diana

I was on the Western Inaugural and didn't buy the pins as I wasn't into the pins then, and figured someone who was would want it more than me, but am now and am sorry I didn't buy one as I started collecting them this year. I don't trade them, I only buy the ones I like.

I have been collecting and trading pins since 1999. Let me offer you this advice--DO NOT BUY PINS COUNTING ON THE RESALE VALUE ON EBAY!! I have seen MANY collectors get stuck with pins this way.

I have personally been stuck with pins that I bought to be "great traders" because of the low number or rarity of the pin. Turns out that some of them are great traders and some of them bomb (same with ebay) Any big collector/trader/seller will be able to tell you the same thing--it's like the stock market--it's a real gamble.

That being said--generally the cruise line pins are the best traders because you have to cruise to get them (or have someone cruising get one for you.) They are not as readily available as pins at the parks or stores.

I'm very happy you were able to get at least one of the pins. I have learned to only get 2 of each pin (one to keep, one to trade) now unless I am picking up an extra or two for traders. I will NEVER buy more than a few of a pin again.

Enjoy your cruise pins--next to my Teddy Bear and Doll Convention pins the cruise pins are some of my favorites!

Diana,

If you'll reread what I wrote, you'll see that I didn't say anything about traders. I only mentioned ebay. Pins are for collecting AND trading. You apparently bought your pins in the spirit of pin trading and that's great. Now a trader who didn't have a chance to get the AC pin because they weren't on your cruise DOES have a chance to have it and in return, you get a great pin that you weren't able to get at a certain event. A fair trade.

Though I guess even ebay could be considering in the "Disney spirit" now since Disney themselves are willing to auction off pins to the highest bidder.
