Why did they do this to Cinderella's castle?

Hi All!

I love love love Disney World, but I just notice that they smacked a big oval-like picture of Cinderella right in the middle of the castle? Why??? I hope this is a temporary thing. Why would they do such a thing? It's looks like someone just slapped some picture on there. I hate it.

They did the same thing to the Epcot Sphere, that add the words EPCOT and mickey hand with a wand on the side of it. Why? :confused3 It makes it look rather cheap. Haven't they ever heard of less is more.

What do you all think? This is just my opinion but when things are perfect like the castle and the EPCOT sphere why change it. Less is More in my opinion...

Thanks all!

I agree with you completely on both counts. But at least they didn't turn the castle into a giant cake. That was awful.

As I understand, it is temporary. I'm excited to see it. Anything has to be better than the pink birthday cake a few years ago.

Amen to the birthday cake castle!! WHAT AN EYESORE THAT WAS. Looked like a huge bottle of PEPTO BISMOL exploded on it. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I will see the castle in just 3 SHORT DAYS so I have no opinion on the new decorations, but I can say TAKE THAT MESS OFF OF SPACESHIP EARTH!!! It was so much more awesome just being plain.

And lets not forget that STUPID BIG OL HAT blocking our beloved Chinese Theater (GMRide) at MGM.

I AGREE!! LESS IS MORE!!! (and better IMHO) :rolleyes1

I really thought that the castle "medallion", as I call it, was going to do something.
Like change the picture during the show or at odd times during the day.
It looks to me like one of those bilboards that changes every minute or so.

It's not bad but it makes no sense to me.

I do like the wand/hand at EPCOT though.
It adds a little color to an otherwise boring golfball, imho.

We really enjoyed all the add-ons to the castle EXCEPT that ugly medallion! Love the gold spires, the gold characters, etc., and I can't imagine them being removed, but the medallion thing is way too big and doesn't do anything for the look of the castle! Glad to hear others agree! :flower:

From what I've read, the medallion will show pictures of the other castles in the Disney parks around the world. I could be wrong.

And I have to admit, I loved the castle on the 25th as a birthday cake.

( But I also loved disco :guilty: )

I actually like the gold treatment of the castle. The medallion I can do without, but the gold accents, and the gold characters all around it are just beautiful.

Now, the birthday cake is just horrendous.

Adding my votes here... have never understood why they blocked the Great Movie Ride entrance with the hat... looking forward to seeing the decked out castle (medallion or not!)... really like all the Future World enhancements at EPCOT including the "Ball Enhancement" - liked the millenium treatment - and that it transformed (and didn't disappear) after the millenium celebration ended.

Agree on the cake, however, by the time I saw it the Florida sun had taken it's toll on the cake and it was looking pretty "drooped".

Castle is beautiful.....except for the billboard on the front....just doesn't fit the theme....
I really wish they would just leave the Castle alone.... :sad1:
I do like what they did in front of the Castle.......lowered all the planting beds and took out the tall trees. :flower:

They have "added" some things to the castle (like the mirror and Wendy and PP flying around one of the spiers) to commemorated the 50th anniv of DL. The previous post is correct that the mirror rotates scenes of castles at the other Disney parks around the world. As I understand it, they are temporary and will be removed (like the horrible birthday cake deco) once the celebration is over in a yr or so.

The EPCOT (SE) addition was done for the mellenium celebration in '99-2000. The red sparkly thing did spell out 2000 and was changed to EPCOT when the celebration was over.

I would rather see it removed but it's not going to happen. I agree to with Bama Tigger about the big hat that is blocking the view of the Chinese Theater at MGM, one of our faves. Thank goodness we have pics from before these larger than life monstrosities!

:rotfl: Eh, it was different, huh? ;) It certainly was a topic of conversation!

I still haven't gotten used to the BAH in MGM/Disney studios. :earseek: That I just don't like. The cake castle wasn't as bad cause I knew it was temporary. :teeth:

Wasn't sure about the Epcot ball being added too?? I am used to it now, I guess...Anyone remember when they added the Mickey hand & wand?????

Answered my own question ;) Interesting article<www.wdwmagic.com/2000_news.htm>

I guess I'm in the minority here, because I love the castle right now, medallion & all. We made sure we had a ton of pictures taken in front of the castle, just because we liked it so much. Can't say I would've felt the same about the birthday cake---I've seen pictures of that. Ick. :rotfl2:

The hat at the Studios...now that's something I can do without. If it actually had some importance, other than being a pin shop, I'd be ok with it. But as it stands now? No.

The "Medallion" is supposed to be a magic mirror and is does indeed show pictures of the other castles in the other Disney parks. I don't like it much either but it seems to be the subject of the rumor that it is temporary. The gold trim is probably permanent. Fortunately, I don't mind that addition, after all, it is Cinderella Castle and it should be ornate.

Like the hat in Disney Studios and some of the sprinkles on top of Spaceship Earth, I truly hope it disappears. Now the birthday cake was obviously only for the 1997 anniversary celebration but because it was so clearly temporary I thought it was very clever and, my guess, not just a little expensive.

:cool1:

OMG - Remember the cake! :rotfl2: What were they thinking. I thought the castle looked really pretty in pictures but wasn't too sure about the Medallion either.

From what I've read, the medallion will show pictures of the other castles in the Disney parks around the world. I could be wrong.

That would be a neat idea, I hope you are right! :cool1:

we are also disappointed with the castle decor for the 50th anniversary, even more so because we're getting married there next march & wanted a bridal portrait session there, and we dont like the newly decorated castle & huge tacky mirror. :sad2:

fyi-the castle will be decorated this way for the 18 month long happiest celebration on earth 50th anniversary.

I think the castle looks beautiful. The gold trim shimmers in the sun. I don't think the picture looks bad either.

I guess I am in the minority, as well. I have only seen pictures thus far but really like everything about the castle. I LOVE the gold trim and the medallion seems nice. It is a little large and takes away a bit from the rest of the castle but if it is just temporary, I think it's wonderful.

As for the Mickey Hat in MGM - not so much! And I couldn't agree more with BamaTigger on the cake looking like a bottle of Pepto exploded on it! :rotfl2: I couldn't have said it better myself!

But no worries, Disney is still just as magical everytime I visit; regardless of construction or large PINK birthday cakes. :wizard:

Have a Disney day!
