Why can't you take strollers thru the back door?

We just returned from WDW, and found that we had to take the stroller (tandem double), folded, onto the bus through the front door. Unless there were seats available up front, my dh had to lift the folded stroller over the seats to get to the back of the bus. It would not fit in the aisle, even when folded. I thought on our last trip ('98, before kids) that people were allowed to take them onto the buses through the back door...

It depends on the bus.

If it's a low-floor bus, the front doors are extra wide, as are the aisles. In fact, the front doors on the Novas are twice as wide as the rear doors. As such, there is no reason to board through the back.

If it's an RTS bus (the ones with the stairs), then you can follow the following procedure:

Wait in line with everyone else. When you reach the front of the line, you may ask the driver if ONE person can take the already folded stroller through the back door. The driver will then close the front door, allow the stroller on through the back, close the rear door, and then resume boarding through the front.

The keys are that the stroller must already be folded, and only the person with the stroller may go through the back. Everyone else must still go through the front.

Disney is not stroller friendly. In their opinion it is safe to lift the stroller over everyone, waste a seat with the stroller in it and stand with your child in the aisles while pascked like sardines. That's the one area that I believe Disney lacks in. At Universal Studios we were able to take the boat from our resort with our child in the stroller. I keep hoping Disney realizes that they need to address their stroller issues.
PS: I'm sorry to all of the people who I bumped into when trying to get my stroller down the aisle.

FWIW Disney also offers monorail and boat service from many of the resorts as well as the TTC. If you don't want to stand on the bus - just wait for the next. Under no circumstances could you or would you want to leave a baby in a stroller in a bus - think about the precautions you take in a car.

If you are using the resort bus service as your primary means of transportation, the best option is to use an easy to fold lightweight stroller or rent in the parks.

Otherwise use a rental car or choose a resort with monorial, boat or bus service.

In my experience the bus drivers have always been very helpfull and friendly.

Plus, boarding through the rear exit door can be a safety hazard as the driver cannot always see everything going on.

Understand, Disney (and everyone else) does things a certain way for a reason. They do it for OUR safety. They don't wake up one morning and say, "I am going to be a jerk to people with strollers today".

I agree with the post above that suggested using a lightweight, butterfly stroller or renting one. Double wide strollers are heavy and take up a ton of space when riding buses and walking in the parks.

You are right, it was a lot easier when we were on the special buses. I guess we should have just kept asking each driver about taking the strollers on through the back door.

We took our full size double stroller b/c our kids do not use strollers at home anymore, so we did not want to invest in a new double umbrella, and also they are over the weight limit for the umbrella strollers. We did put our smallest in an umbrella stroller, and I am so glad that we did, because I could handle that one myself.

All in all, it was very enjoyable trip!

we've never brought our own stroller to the parks... having travelled w/another family that brought their own, we found renting to be easy, convenient and much less of a hassle than schlepping our own...
