Why can't we use our points the last 4 months of use year??????

Can anyone explain the purpose/reasoning behind why a member cannot use their DVC points in the last 4 months of their use year? I don't get why this is done. Member use years are staggered depending on when they joined, so I'm not getting DVC's reasoning for this rule.

You can use your points during the last 4 months of your use year - at any DVC resort.

You cannot book and travel on Disney Collection, Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection vacations within the last four months of your Use Year.

You can however travel in the last 4 months of your Use Year as long as you booked your stay more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year.

This rule only affects Disney Collection, Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection vacations.

I've assumed this is done because the non-dvc entities want max flexibility in filling their capacity...but I'm not sure.

My take on the rule of four is that DVC has to have time to recover the cost of that non-DVC trip and four months or less just ain't gonna cut it. They don't give us access to those trips out of the goodness of their hearts. They have to resell the lodging your points represent before those points expire (four months or less).

So even if you have a Sept UY (points expire on Aug 31) and you call on Aug 29 for Aug 30 and 31 (and DVC lodging is available), you can book a stay at a DVC resort for points for those days.

To reiterate the key point:

You CAN use your points during the last 4 months of your use year.

There are no restrictions other than availability to make a reservation for a DVC resort.

If your points are eligible** to be used for reservations for options within the Disney Collection, the Concierge Collection or the Adventurer's Collection, you may also use your points for one of those options during the last 4 months of your use year. To do so, you must make the reservation prior to the last 4 months of your use year.

** Only points purchased directly from Disney or purchased prior to 3/20/2011,if purchased via resale may be used to book an option from the Disney Collection, the Concierge Collection or the Adventurer's Collection.

You mean DVC properties, not Disney non-DVC properties. If you fail to bank those points (that would mean you are less than four months to the end of your Use Year), you cannot book a non-DVC, non-RCI trip and use those during the last four months of the year. That's the rule of four.

Exactly my take, those points are transferred to CRO to rent out, if someone books only a month or two out, it will be very very difficult to get someone planning a last minute reservation through CRO. With RCI, the demand is pretty high for the trades, so there isn't much of an issue with someone wanting to trade in (plus RCI should absorb the lost room if it is not rented because it was a direct exchange).
