Why can't they follow the rules? Are you a rule follower?

I am definitely a rule follower an it drives me crazy when people think that rules don't apply to them. DD and I were just discussing the drop-off issue this morning. There's always one person who is too lazy to park in the lot when they have to go into the school and as a result they park in the drop-off circle, causing other cars to back up behind them. One of the rules that is often broken and bothers me to no end is the smoking area rule in WDW. I can feel my blood pressure rise every time I am stuck standing in line behind someone with a cigarette.

I have begun parking about a half-block away from the school, because I just can't deal with the pick-up & drop-off drama. I was going to either have a stroke or start kicking in windshields.

I can't stand the people that park in the drop off lane. Even when they have been told face to face STOP DOING THAT - by the principal no less!!

What do they think is going to happen to their kid in the ten feet between the curb and the front door of the school?!? Surely their little darlings are capable of finding the door that is right directly in front of them - I mean, they aren't going to get lost walking ten feet straight ahead. And they aren't going to be kidnapped either - not with teachers and parents surrounding them.

So why why why why do these parents insist on PARKING and taking their child in.

And pickup is even worse. The line is long. People are impatient. So they park, right there in the pickup lane, and get out of their car and find their child. So congratulations, you now have your kid, but guess what? The line is still just as long. And now we have to wait for everyone to get back in their cars and start them up, so in fact it is even longer.

Okay, I have to stop because my blood pressure is rising! This is why I just park around the corner and walk!

Can I ask a question - Why are the kids getting dropped off and not riding the bus? This would be the safest situation at the school.

My kids used to ride the bus every day until my son started high school. For whatever reason, they put my son and daughter on two different buses, even though my son's bus is also an elementary bus.

In order to make sure my son is actually going to school, I either take him to the bus or to the school. If I take him to the bus, my DD won't make her bus in time and vice versa. So it's a whole lot easier to take them to school myself.

At any rate, it's not my kids' safety I'm worried about -- it's the poor kids of the idiot parents who feel they can dump them anywhere on the school grounds.

We had an issue at our daycare where people would park in the handicap spots to pick up and drop off because they were closer. Not only is that wrong but there are two parents who are legitimately handicapped who may need those spots. My husband would tell the owners and they acted like he was the pain in the you know what. Finally he started calling the local police on the people in the spots.....kind of funny - that stopped it though

1)Maybe there is no bus
2)Maybe the bus route is 30-40 minutes long, whereas driving the child to school directly would take much less time, and parents don't want to rush their child.
3)There have been incidents of violence on school buses; bullying, assaults, even sexual assaults.
4)Perhaps the families live too close for the bus, but still too far to walk.

In our case, we live 9/10 of a mile from the school. Too close for the bus. It would take my 5 year old half an hour to walk this distance on his little legs.
So we would have to leave the house at 7:15, which, in a few weeks, will be in the dark.

In the winter, it will be very cold. At the beginning of the school year, it was very hot. I couldn't walk nearly a mile in 90 degree heat and 50% humidity, I wouldn't ask my children to.

Yes, there are LOTS of reasons to take your child to school. It's comforting to see them walk into the school. You know they made it safe. School bus accidents are on the rise...not because of the bus driver but accidents themselves are on the rise with so many people on the roads, not to mention the things your children get introduced to through other children on the bus. We hear about it everyday. Children are taking knives, guns and drugs from their homes and bringing them to school. Most of the time these children do not even know its wrong because they live with it through their parents. Then there is the language...I'm sorry but we don't allow cursing in our home. Once in a while our DD will ask what _______ means, but it would be worse on the bus because then she would be coming into contact with Jr.high and HS students. I don't know if this is on the rise in your state, but we have had 2 little girls kidnapped while waiting for a bus in the past two years, they still have not been found, and last year, a five year old little girl was sexually molested on the school bus by a high school kid. Not once, but twice! Any more reasons to keep your kids from riding the bus?

I'm a rule follower. I have to control the tendency for my blue light to go for a "citizen's arrest" (big Andy Griffith fan LOL ). And I wonder where my DD gets it from... LOL
School drop off and pick up is a biggie for me. I guess that is mostly because of safety issues.
If I could only make a "citizen's arrest"! LOL

In my son's case, we live about 12 miles from the school in an unincorporated area (well, actually, rural, in the cornfields). He attends our parish school, which happens to be across the street from the office and hospital where I see patients. We live equally far away from all the Catholic schools in the area, and this one is the most convenient for us, so, we are members at that church and my son attends that school.

I'm with you on this.

Our elementary has a drop off line. When you enter, it's actually two lanes, the left feeding into the parking lot, the right to drop your kids off. I've seen parents barrel up the left, then when they can't do anything but turn, they drop off the kids next to the cars in the drop off line. Scary.

As for the kids not riding the bus, my kids aren't eligible for the bus (technically, my older son is). I'm well within walking distance, and did walk them to school the first couple of days. My younger son's teacher then tells us that she's leery of any of her first graders walking, mainly because of some of the parents she sees dropping those other kids off! Now we drop off, but I'd really like to walk them over.

I can certainly understand why she wouldn't want first graders walking alone-I can't even imagine that-but why doesn't she want him walking if you are with him? Does it have something to do with the traffic?

Perhaps. I wasn't there for the explanation (DH was informed of this). We're not on a busy highway, but around dismissal time, the road the school is on can get a little hectic. She didn't care that either DH or I would be with the kids-she just wasn't comfortable with the idea.
