Why buy odd numbers of points?

I assumed everybody bought 150 points or 230 or 300 or 500 etc.

Lately people have mentioned in their posts that they "added on 32 points two times" or "Started off with 232 points" or bought any strange # of points. I could understand someone buying 76 points to be patriotic, but could the rest of you explain your thinking?

We bought our 232 points at OKW via resale. I think the original owner was trying to buy the exact number of points for a 2 bedroom in choice season.

We originally bought 270 points at BCV. This would've given us 7 nights in a 1 BR during Magic Season but we recently added on 30 (paid cash) for an even 300 points. Annmarie

We started out with 170 points in March 2002, added on 50 points a few months later, even before our first trip "HOME" and are getting ready to add on 105 MB points to bring us up to 325, who knows after that!!!???!!!

I have a friend who bought 52 points at HH rather than 50 because it would give them 4 week nights in a studio during the summer on their way to WDW.

We added 82 points at HH. Already had 100 there so it gave us 182 -- enough for a Sunday-Saturday week during July in a 1 bedroom. Have since added on another 50 so that gives us 232 at HH. We have the minimum 150 at BWV also.

Like others have stated, I bought the exact number of points I need to stay at a specific resort,in a specific size room at a specific time of the year. The only fly in the ointment would be is DVC did a reallocation of the point chart. If I need 76 points, why buy 80 ?

"Why buy 80 when you only need 76?"

In case you go at a different time of year. In case you go to a different resort. In case you want a bigger room. In case....

My contracts are 232, 270 and 333. Since they were all resale, i can only presume the reasoning. 232 is a 2 BR at OKW for choice. The old points totals had OKW at 269 for a 2 BR Dream season (263 now). I'm not sure about the 333.

tvwalsh, your asking us why we buy odd numbers, I explained why, and then you try and tell me I'm wrong. Read what I said: I bought EXACTLY the points I need for an EXACT time and place. I have no intention on changing. Why would I pay extra for something I do not need ?

I am the one who has bought 32 points twice as add ons. If you look at the point charts, the number of different combinations that are evenly divisible by 8 points is amazing. 32 points seems to give us a lot of different possibilities--the second add on, I probably would have bought more if I felt we could afford it.

Many have bought exactly the number of points they need, others have bought a cushion. Each persons choices and needs are different. In general I've recommended buying a cushion if one is one the low end of the scale and not if one is on the other end. If one is looking at a smaller unit (studio or 1 BR) and/or a lower time of year (Dream or lower), I'd never buy exactly what I needed. The risk is that DVC can (and someday WILL) reallocate points. Someone with 300 points will have much more flexibility than one with 150 points.

why not?

not everything has to end in a 0 or 5. people buy as many points as they think they need. it's as simple as that.

is your 333 contract at BWV?
1 week in a 1-bdrm Std-View Magic Season is 222 points. and 1 week in a Studio Std-View Dream or Magic Season is 111 points.

It is BW and I wondered about that combination. I haven't sat down and tried to see if any combinations would work.

What will be interesting is when Disney reallocations the points and it must eventually happen. I personally expected it to happen before know. Those with relatively smaller contracts that bought essentially the points they needed will be squealing like a pig. I'll feel sorry for those that didn't know it could happen but will have little sympathy for the rest, even if the sales person told them it was unlikely to happen.

This is one reason why we are trying to get as many points as we can now, getting ready to do a MB add on as soon as our home mortgage refi is finished. I'll be retiring in less than 10 years, and we want to get as many points as we can afford while I'm still working!!!

That's one of the reasons we added on 30 points to our 270 at BCV. DS will be going off to college soon. DH and I want to be able to take our own vacation while giving DS some points to use with his friends during his school breaks. Once DS is away at college, we will be able to travel during any season and stay in either a studio or a 1BR (although everyone states it is difficult to go back to a studio)! This made sense for us. Also, I didn't want to finance the add on and 30 points fit into my budget at the time. Annmarie

I'll be the 1st one to admit I'm not the sharpest tack in the pack:p , but I don't understand what you are saying about the reallocation of points.

My understanding is that they can reallocate points for any given week, but not increase them. If so, why on earth would I be squealing like a pig if and when this happens?:p

Every time we added on we did so with the exact number we need for what we had planned at the time. Say we wanted a trip and were 43 points short of doing so. When we added onto VWL I first wanted to be able to stay 1 week in a studio every 3 years. Then decided every 2 years. Then decided 10 days in the spring. Three add-ons later that is still not enough. We just added on Fri. w/BWV so we can stay 10 nights in the fall. Once we even added just enough to do the cruise that year. You will find DVC people are not normal. We justify adding on ANY way we can.
