Why Are People Such Slobs?

I really do not understand it.

I was at Sweet Tomatoes last night and I felt embarassed for the human race. People were making huge messes everywhere... the mess makers were mostly adults, sadly. Leaving the straw wrappers on the counter when the garbage was 2 feet away, throwing napkins on the floor (not dropping but actively throwing), spilling an insane amount of food over the counters, etc. It was pathetic.

And the worst part was, when they were finished with their meal they left a mess mildly resembling what it would look like if a hurricane had passed. There was no returning of the parmesean, hot sauce or ketchup to the counter it belonged, crumbs, a juice bottle and napkins were all over floor, there was absolutely no attempt to tidy up before they left... it was horrific.

Why are people such slobs?

Is it because someone else can cleap up their ****, as if they can be the tiniest bit courteous not make it look utter pig pen? Is it because they're lazy?

There might be people to collect your plates and wipe down the tables when they're finished but come on, they didn't need to be jerks!

Rant over. People suck.

I wonder that myself! When we stayed at the Poly-CL some of the guests in the lounge were just that-I mean it's one thing to have kids & they can be messy-but you can pick up after yourself...sometimes I think these people just assume b/c they were staying CL they were entitled to leaving the tables & their garbage all over-and if that was the case they could have at least left a tip for the workers....amazing.

It's funny that you mention this, because I just got on DS about this. He broke his boot lace outside of a public building today (right outside the door) and was just going to leave the 6" of broken lace lay there on the sidewalk! He knows better! Grrrrr....

Yes and yes to the bolded lines. Some people think the bus person is there to clean up any disgusting mess they make. True, that person is there to clear the table, but it doesn't mean the diners can't refrain from throwing things on the floor or at least tidy up a little before they leave. And some people are just too lazy to lift a finger to do anything. Even when there are garbage cans all over a mall food court, they leave their mess on the table!

I get really grossed out at buffets sometimes by people sticking their fingers in the food, licking them and then reaching for something else. I always took the food for my kids at buffets until I was sure they could serve themselves neatly. I once actually saw a kid trying to lick the extra ice cream off the spout on the ice cream machine!:scared1: His mother just said, "Don't do that honey." She didn't even attempt to wipe off the spout or tell an employee that it needed to be cleaned. I'm glad we were done and ready to leave at that point!

Have you ever been in the hub after the show in front of the castle? Trash everywhere......the custodial people bring out those giant vacuum thingies to pick it all up. Truly unbelievable

Years and years ago, DH and I were eating out and we saw a family with a toddler. The child was throwing food off of her high chair on purpose. The father said don't let him do that we have to clean up the mess. The mom said and I quote." Oh let him have fun, we don't have to clean up the mess, it isn't our house." No words can explain that type of behavior.

I know what you guys mean. It's mind blowing some of the stuff people do! I was shopping at this little boutique and this lady had oodles of clothes to try on. I was behind her waiting for the changing room. I was okay with waiting. So when the lady is done, she walks out and leaves all of her clothes on this one little hook. I had no room at all for the things I had!

She lingered near some tables and shelves while I tried to get around her with an excuse me (politely). I promptly got all of her stuff and said excuse me again, so I could move beside her to hang her stuff on the return rack. She said she was sorry and something about not realizing there was only one hook? I told her it was alright, but how could she not know? Granted it was only a few steps, but get a clue! I don't have someone walking behind me picking up my messes. :sad2:

And this starts the behavorial pattern of "monkey see, monkey do". And that humans can fling poo too. Makes one wonder if they live like nasty sub-human creatures at home in a nasty house with trash everywhere like you'd see on that show, "Hoarders"... :scared1:

I worked as a waitress for 12 years and saw my share of messes that some people left at their tables and it was appalling. The worst was this one young couple with their baby. Our highchairs didn't have trays, you just put them up against the table. They allowed their baby to "fingerpaint" on the tablecloth with mashed potatoes. :scared1: They gave the baby other foods, which promptly were dropped on the floor (red jello, peas, macaroni and cheese, etc.) but the worst was the dried mashed potato swirls on the tablecloth (vinyl). They did not even attempt to clean anything up when they left. It took 3 waitresses to get the mess cleaned up. :sad2:

I was a station manager for a major gas station. I wont even tell you what people do in the bathrooms. There were days I wanted to resign:scared1::scared1: All I will say just try to imagine if you will. But then again maybe you would not want to. :cool1: Jo

I was lucky, I never had much of a mess when I was a waitress. It's funny, it happened so many years ago, long before DH and I even thought of having kids, but to this day when we eat out with our 3 kids I clean up everything, I even wipe the table off with my napkin if the kids dropped something. I have had waitresses tell me not to clean up, but I can't let it go.

This is an interesting topic, and it reminds me of something. Where I live, and also in many other places in the country I have been, it is customary to clean up your own table at a fast food restaurant.

But there is at least one place in this country where I observed almost every single person leave everything behind on their tables at a fast food restaurant, to be cleaned up by the staff. It was at a fast food restaurant in a truck stop that was literally in the middle of nowhere on I-35. I have been to this truck stop about six times, and this happened every time.

How is it that there were THAT many people that stopped at this place in the middle of nowhere and they all did this? Did they all come from places that it is not customary to clean up after yourself in a fast food restaurant? I've traveled the country a little, and I've never seen another place that did this!

It's still baffling to me!

I can always count on you to back me up/comisserate on server stories. I was thinking about babies, too. Why do parents let them make disgusting messes and not do a thing about them? I know kids make messes- I have 2! But I always did my best to control the mess (like not let them fingerpaint with potatoes) or clean up what you couldn't control (large chunks of food on the floor, like fries). They never tip well, either. Comes with being inconsiderate!

We have to stick together, don't we? People who have never worked as a server just don't understand. ;)

I agree with you, kids are going to make messes and I never minded cleaning up after them when the parents at least tried to keep the mess to a minimum and did like you do in picking up the bigger chunks. And I didn't even mind the really messy ones, when the parents tipped well. :) I thought it was very kind of them to do that. I did have one couple who actually put down a "drop cloth" underneath their child's high chair. They picked it up by the corners and took it outside to shake it when they left. I could hardly believe it! I just wanted to :worship: them! I thought it was awesome, but of course didn't expect every other parent to do that.

If you guys think those places are bad, trying being an usher at a movie theater. When I first started, I assumed ushers were there to rip tickets and to sweep up any stray popcorn dropped by the guests while they ate.

Nope. I think some people would decide they'd eaten enough so they would then dump their entire bucket all over their row. Probably the best items to clean up were used diapers and condoms.

People look at us strangely as we clean up our tables, floor under children in restaurants, etc. If we make a mess, we clean a mess.

My children have commented on the digusting behaviour of others in public many times, and we always make sure they know that we appreciate how courteous they are to others. We've been thanked many times by restaurant staff as well.

Not sure what can be done...it makes me wonder what their houses look like?

I am in high school and once my friend went in the bathroom, then quickly walked out. I asked her why she left. She said someone smeared poop on the wall :eek::headache:

We quickly called the janitor. I felt so bad that he had to clean up after someone else did something gross.

Though I cannot relate completely to this, it always amazes me how people leave messes in the theaters also. I couldn't imagine seeing it on a daily basis.

Everytime I leave the theater, I say "are you kidding me?!?!?" to whomever I am with when I see people leave their drinks, popcorn buckets and other garbage at the seat they were at. SERIOUSLY? You can't dispose of the stuff on the way out?

Urgh, people are amazing.

It drives me nuts to see trash around WDW. There is a grabage can every how many feet? Walt specifically studied how far people would walk to find a garbage can before littering. Yet, it is still not enough for some people...
Yes, theaters are bad, too. Why leave your trash? You are walking out past a garbage can! Food courts are another pet peeve. You don't have a server. Take your tray to the trash and all of the crap on your table, too.
