Why are deers suicidal? DH has hit 2 in 15 months!

Same problem here is Australia only we are hitting wallabies, kangaroos, wombats and echidnas. There are 'outback' areas of australia where it is really quite unsafe to drive between dusk and dawn because of kangaroos.

Very sad

I think part of it is that in their natural habitat in N. America, deer are used to being the fastest creatures around. (It's not like we have cheetahs.)
They have no sense that a car can go faster than them, so when they dart in front of cars, they think they are going to make it.

In Newfoundland, on average one person a week is killed in a collision with a moose. I don't even know if a Hummer would win against one of those bad boys. It's seriously like hitting a wall. At least with deer there's a good chance the car and driver will reign victorious!
I was speeding along the highway in Arizona & a cop stopped me. He was so mad mostly because he said he's seen too many times what hitting an elk (about the size of a moose,) at high speed can do to a person & car.

I've heard how in Australia they have special kangaroo guards for the fronts of cars. I jokingly asked, "What are they, trampolines?" :lmao:

Deer Whistles!!! My trucker cousin told me to get them after a bad experience driving through Texas.:sad2:

Deer can't hear the cars coming, so the whistles alert them to you and hopefully keep them out of the road.

It's not just in the Midwest, it's everywhere that suburban crawl has overtaken natural habitats.

We keep building, and building, and squeezing these animals out of places they'd normally just live.

We actually had 4 in our backyard this morning, which usually happens after it snows. We have some apparently tasty shrubs at the back of the house, that are easy for them to get to.

Forget that. Instead, we have rid the area of natural predators, and this is the price we pay.

how do deer whistles work? Are they installed on the car?

Maybe the coyote that are now living all over the country - yes, even in the major metro areas on the East Coast - will like the taste of venison?

(There's certainly enough of it running around on the hoof. :rolleyes1 )

agnes!

My husband hit a 600lb moose with his motorcycle one night. He was VERY lucky he walked away with a sprained ankle and a big bruise on his butt. The moose was killed. He hit the moose broadside, and the handlebars were ripped right off the motorcycle.
I've hit a couple of deer; it is terrible.

Reminds me of a joke from Comedian Ron White....

his brother was so impressesed with his ability to hunt he was bragging about the skill it takes to shoot a deer.
Ron say's ... Well I hit one at 55 miles an hour. In my Vaaaaaaaan. With the lights on and the horn bloooowin. Oh what an elusive little creature....:rotfl2:

Just thought I would share this with ya.

Here in South Georgia there are two types of people: Those who have hit a deer with their car and those that will  . On a serious note, I know of a girl whos father was killed when he hit a deer and the deer came through the windshield. Scary thought, I have had several run in infront of me on my way to work in the morning. Just remember if one crosses the road chances are another is on the way, I have learned to expect two and have saved my car more than once using this little tidbit of knowledge.
