I did and was disappointed. at 9AM EST, 11 months out, I sent an email requesting a BWV Standard room for a long weekend, 2nd week of December. About 3 days later I got an email back which basically said sorry, but all that was available were preferred views.
I'll really never know if I would have gotten the standard view if I had phoned. I do know that I won't email a request again. I'll always phone until they have a real-time on-line reservation system.
