Okay.... it's getting a bit warm here in Florida and it's time to put up those new ceiling fans (just bought 6 from Home Depot today)...

The man at Home Depot demonstrated how "simple & easy" it is to install these fans......... our house is already wired and has the anchors -- so all we have to do is just connect the wires and hang!

I know it sounds easy..... but I'd feel better knowing someone who has done this still thinks it's EASY.

Also --- (hate to ask) has anyone done it themselves and had any major problems?????

Thanks in advance ---- I plan to get started on this tomorrow (if I can convince DH we won't burn down the house).

My husband installed them in our house and he didn't have any problems. In fact he has done it twice since we had the replace them after hurricane Andrew.

We put all the fans in our home and had no problems. We even had to put the anchors in and had remote controls with our fans. We had to buy a special pole for one of our vaulted ceilings but even that was a cinch. No problemo. :)

My brother and DH installed them in our house, but brother is an electrician.

Piece of cake. We just called the electrician. It was simple: phone, dial-tone, 7 digits, and....voila...the answer was blowin' in the wind;)

We just got 2 today.. arrived home with them 5 minutes ago.

Jeff has installed several and they really were pretty easy.. well thats what HE said anyway....::yes::

Ceiling fans are a BREEZE to install. I've put in 6 fans - where there used to only be lights. And, I've added light fixtures to 2 existing ceiling fans. I've also changed out the wiring on several of these installations, so the light switch and the fan switch could operate off a wall light switch. On some of the installations, the existing bracing was adequate, others we added a fan brace. Some of the installations we had access the the attic, and others we didn't.

Expect the first of your fans to take a while. The rest will all go up very quickly.

I've done all the ceiling fans in our house. Some are easier that others, but they are very doable by a homeowner. And yes I'm female!!!

Yep, easy. ::yes::

Just don't do what my DH (the electrical engineer) did. He decided he did not need to turn the power off at the breaker, just the switch. He was on an aluminum step ladder when DS#2, about 3 at the time, came in and hit the switch. DH was shouting will supporting the motor. Luckily I was just in the next room. Now we ALWAYS turn off power at the breaker. :teeth:

Just make sure the existing electrical box is made to support the weight of the fan! If not, they make a expandable brace which installs from below for this purpose. Any home depot style store should have these supports.

When we moved in 13 years ago only one room (the kitchen) had one. DH added one to the bedroom, computer room and the dining room. It wasn't hard at all.

That reminds me of when I was a kid. My dad would work on electrical issues while having me stand by with a 2X4 just in case he got electrocuted. He would say "If I start acting funny, just whack me off the ladder with this as hard as you can". :sad2: I'm surprised the man has lasted this long. ;)

Thanks everyone!!! :sunny:

I just shared your responses with DH and I think it helped put his mind at ease a bit.

MosMom -- That sounds exactly like something my Dad would have done - LOL!!! ::yes::

So.... hopefully this afternoon we'll begin putting up the fans.

Feel free to add any more experiences (hopefully all good ones ;) )

You guys are the best!!! :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I know you aren't supposed to , but I put the fans up without the bracing in our house. They seem to be doing fine. They've been there for 8 years now.

I was thinking of doing this, so thanks in advance for this great thread! I'm have existing light fixtures, and wanted to put a fan in our bedroom. I'm not used this hot weather! Not even AC is doing the trick for me!
