Who's been yachting?

I'm watching the show "Below Deck" (I know its bad reality TV, but whatever) and it made me wonder if any Disers have done it? If so, what was the experience? What was the cost, and tip, etc.? Was it worth it? I'm fascinated in whatever folks would be willing to share.

I spent about 1 1/2 years cruising and living aboard a 40-foot sailboat with a friend in the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. I was in my 30s and lived simply and cheaply. I call it my first retirement, after 10 years of serving in the military and working middle management for a large corporation. It was awesome and well worth it.

That's awesome! Sounds like an amazing experience. Did ya'll man the boat yourselves since you said cheaply, or have the total experience with staff and chef? A year plus of hanging out on a sailboat sounds amazing!

No crew, except when we had visitors from the States, then we'd make them do the stuff we didn't want to do and buy us food and alcohol ashore.

Yacht? Well...I know SiriusXm does Yacht Rock radio in the summer (and yes, I listen sometimes). I also presume it's customary to stock this on it... That's all I got.

Every summer my dad and his brothers and their families would all vacation together. Every year they'd forget they are totally terrible sailors, would rent a sailboat or cat, whatever, every year, we'd have to call the coast guard. The ocean and the lake are 2 different things.

I watch that show too. How nice it would be to be guests on such a yacht.

My mom has a 'yacht' and belongs to a yacht club. It was something she and my dad were into before he passed away. It's not a super fancy yacht but they took it on trips with their club. Was a fun time for them. They stuck to the Chesapeake Bay area.

That's what I was watching earlier. The current guy is hit and miss for sure. I'd be pissed if I was on a yacht and got a chicken salad for lunch.

We've done a live aboard dive yacht. Since it's purpose in life is to be a dive boat not as fancy but we did stay in the VIP suite at the very top of the boat. The food was great and they catered to all the divers needs. This was in Palau. https://www.oceanhunter.com/. We were on the Ocean Hunter III

I don't know if I'd say I'd been yachting, but I did sort of grow up around yachts. You know that saying "It takes a village"? My village was my parents' yacht club.

I actually kind of hate boating now.

My village never owned a yacht. We were obviously a poor village. Couple of fishing boats and a ski jet, that was it.
