The one between San Antonio and Austin...Have always wanted to go judging from what we've seen on the Travel Channel. Are contemplating a trip west.

How's the park?

Did you stay onsite? Was the convenience worth it?

What else is in the area which would interest kids 15, 10 and 9 girl girl boy?

You know, I lived in San Antonio for 6 years, left, and now I live here again. I STILL haven't been there. If you go, let me know how it is :teeth:

Haven't been there but I have been tubing on the river that runs along the park. If you get there, try it - it's a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Maybe someone from that area will have more info - we were with a group that handled all the details.

Oh wow...I love Schlitterbahn, now its been a long time since I have been but I think that every one of you will enjoy it! Its very close to San Antonio, and an easy day trip to do. If you stay in San Antonio area theres Sea World and other fun things to do..Alamo..riverwalk,,tons. I think you would enjoy Schlitterbahn if you did it for a day or stayed there. Its a great park and they keep adding to it. I found this site for you.

Which you probably have..anyways let me know if you go and enjoy it! ITs sure one of my personal favorites! I am 34 and I remember going there when I was 8-13 and then again in my 20's!

Yes, we have been with our two boys and really enjoyed it. Though be warned that in the summer the storms crop up and of course if they do they will close the parks. This is what happened to us at 2:00 in the afternoon so we did not go on every ride that we had wanted to that day.

We lived in Austin for years, so I'm biased, but I think Austin is one of the bright centers of the universe. (So, yep, there's lots to do around there.)

Anyway, we went back a few years ago (with DS, now 9) and stayed in New Braunfels so we could really do Schlitterbahn. It was definitely worth it to be able to come and go into the waterpark. We did two days, and we had a great time. New Braunfels is a beautiful area with a great German influence, so there are lots of restaurants, etc.

Then, of course, there's San Antonio!!! What a great place. The River Walk, all the history, and for the kids Fiesta Texas. It's definitely worth the trip.

Next time we go back, we want to do Schlitterbahn Padre Island. That really looks "awesome." (Old Schlitterbahn commercial, sorry.)

I have been there twice. I really like it. Unlike most water parks, there are places that are almost wooded, so you can get out of the sun a bit.

Of course, the majority of the park is in the blazing sun ;)

I've been 3 times (2 days each) and we're going back this summer and staying at the resort there this time. Other times, we've stayed in San Marcos for a cheap room and made th 20 minute drive there, which wasn't bad, but we want to try staying right there (at about 5 times the cost though!) Keep in mind that it is really 2 separate parks and you really need 2 days to have any chance of seeing it all. One section is like a regular water park, and then there is the original, older section that is my absolute favorite! They have one tube chute that takes about 30 minutes from beginning to end. It has some parts that are slow moving like a lazy river, and other parts where you sort of go down hills. It's a blast! We usually spend 1 full day at the older part (the one with the castle), 1/2 day at the newer park, and then end up back at the older part for the rest of the 2nd day.

The older part also actually uses water from the nearby river and sort of flushes it out each day, thus using the river as a sort of natural filtering system. The older part also has lots of shade and natural trees. The Travel Channel had a special on it last year and it was very interesting.

It may be difficult to get a room at the Schlitterbahn resort for this Summer though. I think they book 11 months ahead and I think there are many regulars who book the same week each year.

I have been to the one in News Braunsfeld a couple of times with my scout troop. It is a great deal of fun. Actually, it is three separate parks with a bus connecting them. They have some very nice rides including a ride that moves you with water jets (I think that one of the Disney water parks is using this ride as a model for a new ride at WDW).

It can get crowded and there can be long lines for some of the rides.

New Braunsfeld has some good german cooking with a great smokehouse.

Have fun.

We were there in '03. It's a huge park--plan an entire day and then some. Ages ranged from 4-16--(plus parents and grandparents) and all had fun. Personally, I never made it over to the newer side--but I enjoyed the rides on the side I was on, especially the world's longest tube ride that went out into the river. The only thing freaky about that ride was that it was closed for a while because someone spotted a snake in the river. Eeek! :scared1:
We stayed at a campground in San Antonio, a beautiful city with lots and lots to see and do--Riverwalk, Fiesta Texas, Alamo, breakfast tacos, great bbq, etc. Okay, now I'm hungry... Enjoy your trip! :goodvibes

I lived in New Braunfels for about 6 months and never got around to going. I went back last May and we drove by the park. I wasn't really impressed with the looks of the "resort". Think rustic KOA campground - not Disney. I'd make it at least a 4 day trip and stay in San Antonio. There is so much to do there as well and a room on the Riverwalk with a balcony is my favorite!

I live in New Braunfels. We're season ticket holders. Great waterpark. It's divided into three sections. Blastenhoff & Surfenberg are within walking distance to each other. What we call the old (original) park is accessible by tram. The old park has several tube rides that feed off the Comal Springs (very cold water). The far end of the old park is for children.

Blastenhoff & Surfenburg are the newer sections with more thrill rides, such as my fave, the Master Blaster (water coaster). These areas also have kid areas.

Never stayed on site, but a lot of people do.

As far as other things to do, San Antonio is 30 miles south. Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

You, my dear, live in one of the most beautiful cities on earth! I loved every minute that I was there. :goodvibes

We go there approx once a year and plan to take our nephew there in June. It is the best water part ever built. I prefer the old section, even though I love Master Blaster. Plan for a full day or pehaps 2. You have never seen a water park that is this big before. The resort always looked a bit run down to me, but I have only seen the outdies and I have never heard any complaints about it.

I agree that there's plenty to do in San Antonio plus there's caves, quaint old towns and wildlife parks in the area of New Braunfels. You might enjoy one afternoon in the old town of Gruene which is actually a part of New Braunsfels now. There's lots of shops in old buildings and you can float on the river there too. I personally love the old dance hall where the whole family is welcome. :)

There's several chain hotels in New Braunsfels and a few old, old hotels that have been refurbished. A few friends swear by staying onsite at the Schlitterbahn just for the convenience.

One bit of advice: be at Schlitterbahn when it opens and hit the master blasters and big slides first thing. This waterpark gets extremely crowded at times.

Schlitterbahn for the day and finishing up the night at Gruene Hall have been some of my favorite days ever!

New Braunfels is a great town; lots of fun for a weekend. I need to get back down there before I graduate and move too far away!
