Who was the very first DISer?

There were a couple of times before that time that the number of posts were lost when the boards were updated as I recall.

OMGosh yes! Losing post counts happened everytime boards were updated when I first joined! It made me so mad because I was looking forward to going from earning my ears to veteran!

The only ones I recognize immediately were Dagny, CamColt and Uncleromulus.
I didn't post much back then. ;)

I recognize those names too. And I didn't post much back then either. My post count didn't start going up until I discovered a certain podcast and the podcasters decided to sponsor a cruise.

DIS Investigations on the scene again... :)

Typically User IDs (UIDs) are assigned sequentially, starting at some arbitrary value.

Pete's UID on the system appears to be 1721. His "Join Date" is 06-01-1997.

Baloo is 1719, with a join date of 04-21-2000.

There are no single digit UIDs, but some random checks show that there is a UID of 500 and 1001 - but they have join dates AFTER Baloo.

So this tells me that at least to start the UID allocation was NOT sequential, at least when the current board incarnation came about. It could have been an import of users from a previous version, and the order was arbitrary based on how they were exported from the old system.

Which means unless WebmasterAlex gives me access to the database, I've got nothing :)

Even database access would not help you. At one point we had a hosted solution that increased our rate by several 100%, we had to start all over.

The present numbering is due to importing in various software packages over the years, the lowest number that is actually assigned to a user is 107

I've been a member for quite a few years. I would be like Kim, though, and did not have a bigger post count until the podcast board.

I believe I was around in 1997/1998 as well. I recall the crashes, losing my start date and post count at least twice - and having to reregister and start all over again. Thus, one of my tag fairy tags.

I've been a regular poster all of this time, but have probably posted here on the podcast board more in the past two years than I had in total up until then.

I must have joined after the big crashes. My join date showing Aug 1999 is correct. I did start lurking a few months before that, but I don't ever remember having to re-register.

I don't know who the first to post was, but I believe I was one of the first few visitors to this site. I was here in 1997 lurking, not posting. I wish I did post back in 1997, but I was just visiting the DIS for information and not interacting. I think I was a bit timid about posting on the Internet.
Before 1997 finding information about Walt Disney World on the Internet was limited. When the DIS came along it really helped bring a lot of knowledge together. A place where we could share our experiences at WDW. It wasn't a place like you see today where everyone shares tips, tricks, ideas, news, etc. It evolved into that later. The DIS was more of a place where you'd talk about what you saw at WDW and bounce ideas off of other posters. At least that's how I saw it.
you are so right, there was not that much info available back then, so the DIS was very unique! i was on board posting in 1999, but not very often (obviously, look at my post count from the last 11 years). the boards have come a long way baby!!

In the very early days before the DIS really got rolling there were small Disney communities on Prodigy and Delphi. There were restaurant reviews and even a board on Prodigy devoted to the DVC. That's how I learned about it first. As I recall, it was in the early nineties before the GUI interface. Boy, do I feel old! :scared1:

Cool! I love hearing all about these early DIS days from all you old people... ;) and by old I mean only in screen name age of course! :rotfl:

Apparently back when the boards were first starting I was still mastering my AOL email account and paying for internet by the hour...the DIS could have been a very dangerous addiction back then!

I have been a member since 2000. back in those days I was mainly a lurker, sometimes poster. I came from another board (I actually don't remember the name of it). :confused3 Well I went on a trip & came back and everyone was fighting and people were being kicked off and then there was a charge to be on that board so I went running like crazy and found this one. Over the years I have joined other boards, but this one has always been "home". People here are so friendly. So I am not the first DISer, but I remember Baloo fondly as she was the first moderator of the Creative DISign board. Penny:hippie:

Ah, yes...I have very fond memories of Prodigy, there was some very good people there. So many years ago, but Prodigy is what got me hooked on Disney message boards.

I could have sworn that someone mentioned on a podcast awhile back that Bob was the very first DISer?

You and me both! There were some great folks there. Do you remember the "Ask Cid" thread where she would answer questions about WDW, especially about Disney entertainment, which was the area in which she worked as a CM?

No, but I remember an older gentlemen (since deceased) who was such a gentleman and very knowledgeable and helpful. I used to have a print out of one of his posts but can't find it now.
We did meet a CM (David) through the boards and actually ended up meeting him in Orlando and spent a day at Universal with him and a day at Disney, it was very fun and we learned a lot through him. That's been over 10 years ago but we have very fond memories of him.
