Who to tip

The bellman thing got to be a real pain in wallet, and sensibilities.

Now, at the start, I ask the bellman if he expects a tip.
If he says yes (they always do :) ) I tell him to make sure he
brings the bags to our room, or to my car in the other case.
Never had a bellman object, or fail to meet me!
The only exception is when they transport across resorts.

For dining, I begin the experience at 20% in my mind.
Then decrement that rate for each lack of service.
Good waiters knows when they have slacked and
are able to build back pts. with extra attention.

I never tip the maid staff unless I ask for special service.
I never stay concierge, too poor.

Very interesting, I didn't know Disney actually printed what services you tip for. Also interesting they don't mention house keeping.

I too had no idea about tipping house keeping until I started planning thist latest trip...that's when all this stuff came up.

I had no Idea I was suppose to tip the staff in concierge!!!! But thanks to these boards I know I am suppose to.:)

There is no need to tip the concierge staff, unless they do something REALLY over the top. (We had one of the AKL concierge staff offer to run a personal business errand for us on her own time! We declined, but had we been in a bind and taken her up on her extraordinarily kind offer we certainly would have given her a cash tip or AmEx Gift Cheque) Many people (including myself) bring a small gift or send a basket of goodies to share for a job well done.

The turndown service is done by hosuekeeping, not the concierge staff, so if you are a housekeeper tipper, don't forget them :)

Since housekeeping is not a tipped position, I don’t think the maids expect tips or will do a lesser job if they don’t get them. In fact that’s why I enjoy tipping them; they really appreciate it, unlike the positions where the tip is expected. Unfortunately, I’m afraid that a lot of people here have the impression that they are supposed to tip the housekeepers or have been guilted into it since it seems like most people here do it. I wonder if the housekeepers have any idea how much they’ve benefited from the internet. They were probably very confused (yet happy) when they started seeing the proliferation of “mousekeeping” envelopes. I’d be willing to bet that a VERY small percentage of the general public leaves a tip for the housekeeper, and that when they do it’s a very special treat.

The funny thing is that I've ALWAYS tipped housekeeping, long before there was a WWW, and was suprised at how many don't when I came to these boards.

I've worked for many companies, and everyone of them had a section on gratuities in their corporate travel guidelines, and a housekeeping tip was always a reimburseable expense. The company I currently work for (an International Fortune 200) allows a $2 per day housekeeping gratuity, per person. :)

Hmmm, that’s interesting ducklite. I don't know whether my company allows it -- I've prepared a lot of expense reports and have never seen a tip for housekeeping, but they always put in for baggage handling. I’m no expert on tipping, but I’m guessing that the real test would be how the IRS treats the position. They assume a certain percentage of tips for waitstaff, and I’m guessing they’d do the same for bellstaff, but I doubt they do it for housekeeping staff. And if that’s the case, the housekeepers are making out pretty well since they could easily get away with not reporting the tips at all.

I really hate that the tipping situation is so unclear. I think most of us want to do the right thing, but how are we supposed to learn what is appropriate? As we can see on these boards, almost everyone is confused about tipping at one time or another.

I always get confused on the valet tipping. DO I tip the person parking my car and the person getting it for me too? (I usually do because I just never know!) But when they see me coming they hurry and get it, so maYBe tipping both ways is helpful! LOL

I have the Valet answer.....you only tip the guy getting your car, not the one parking it.

Same here. I thought tipping housekeepers was a standard practice until I saw differently on this board! My parents were tipping the maids at the 8 Days Inn on our first trip to WDW back when it opened! I even tip the maid at the hotels I stop over at on my way to WDW. My husband has an expense account with his company. They have a part right on their form about housekeeping gratuities.
