Who remembers hard sauce?

a bourbon version is commonly used to top Bread Pudding.

I've had bread pudding with a whiskey sauce, it was da bomb

Stupid question maybe but never having had it, how is this topping much different than buttercream icing? The ingredients seem to be identical (except thinned with liquor instead of milk) and the method is similar.

It's similar but hard sauce is not as creamy and soft. It is served cold on a warm dessert and it melts into it. It is a thicker consistency than icing.

I have never had plum pudding or mincemeat pie. I have no idea what "hard sauce" is.

Hard sauce has more butter in the butter/sugar ratio I think. When I made it, I used the back of a spoon to mix the sugar into softened butter. My mom used to make a mince meat pie (non meat version) at Thanksgiving until she was no longer able to bake.

I remember making this in Home Ec, back in the late 60's/ early 70"s. We made it to go with our apple crisp. It was good, but too sweet for me. I still make the apple crisp once in a while, but not the hard sauce. Was it ever called hard tack, for some reason that sticks in my head? Oh the old memories

Hard tack is completely different. Kind of like a dry cracker/biscuit.

My mum has always made it at home. It’s quite easy - especially since the advent of standing mixers! I don’t think I’ve ever seen it sold in stores though.
