I took a life insurance physical this morning.
The person who came to my house this morning, who refused to get directions (I offered) from me yesterday, got lost, and even after she called at 7:50 this morning to get clarification, and then called again at 8:05, she got to my house at 8:10.
All I can think is...I have to go to the bathroom. Since I knew that they were going to do a urine test, I specifically did not "go" when I got up in the morning. Since I was also fasting, due to the cholesterol test, I figured since there was "nothing in" in the last 12 hours, there would be little "out". So I requested to do that first.
She says fine - gives me the cup, and asks me to fill it up halfway, and bring it back out to the kitchen. Now, I am a female. I am not quite sure how to leave my deposit in the cup, without getting the outside messy. This cup is not coming back into my kitchen - no way, no how. I washed my hands, left it on the counter by the sink. She goes into the bathroom, and does her thing, and comes back out into the kitchen. We start the interview while seated at my kitchen table.
A couple of minutes later, I realize the gloves that she was wearing are sitting on my kitchen table. I question her on this. Now - I have already mentioned that the outside of my specimen container is messy. I see the gloves on my table. They are where I normally eat. Needless to say - I flipped out. I basically am making the connection that there is PEE ON MY KITCHEN TABLE.
So, of course, I say something. She totally defends what she is doing, because - she only has one pair of gloves, and she still needs to use them for the blood tests. Now I am flipping out more. I also go get some disinfectant wipes and wipe down the affected area on my table. I am so grossed out at this point.
I explained that I work at a hospital, and can't believe that she is not excersicing a little bit of an asceptic technique. Oh - by the way, since I work at a hospital - she asks me if I happen to have any gloves around, she would be happy to use them. No, I don't.
By this time, she's got me running around the house. I need to have my height measured with shoes one. HUH???? Then I have to truck out to my car to get my driver's license. It's cold out there today. This is not her fault - who would have thought that the do the height with shoes on. And, - I had every document that I needed to have available - but a copy of my liscense wasn't on my original list. Hindsight - it does make sense that she needs to see it. I just happen to leave my purse in the car most of the time.
By this time, I am calling a nurse neighbor on the phone, and ask her if she can bring over some gloves. Which she does.
Next up on the exam is the blood pressure. My blood pressure is higher than it ever has been recorded, 130 over 88. I get my sweater back on, did I mention it is just cold in Wisconsin right now? She says about 30 seconds later - Oh I need to do the other arm. So, now I have to take off my nice warm sweater again. While yes, I am furious about how this whole exam is going...I am wondering how much my current mood is affecting my blood pressure. The second arm measures 140 over 90. I am also wondering if she knows what she is doing? It took her about 1 minute to take the blood pressure in each arm. I don't recall it taking more than a couple of seconds at my Dr's office for them to do it.
For the record, the last time it was measured at my Dr's office, it was 120 over 83.
I checked on line to see what standard life insurance guidelines are for blood pressures. To be in the "super preferred rates", the guidelines are in the 135 over 85 range, assuming the height/weight and cholesterol are within the ranges. I am OK in the other categories - just not today's BP readings.
My question - finally is: Will they give me an opportunity to have them recheck my blood pressure, so that I can appropriately be in the correct pricing category. The next category is about $60 more a year - and multiplied by 20 years comes out to $1200 for the term of this policy. And I am just cheap. Should I ask about this up front, or wait until they deny my coverage?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Oh, by the way, my entire kitchen table has been disinfected 3 times now...I am still grossed out about this.
