Who Knew We Were Virginians?

Wilberforce wrote Amazing Grace I think. There is a college near us named for him, Wilberforce University. Traditionally it's an African-American college.

As I walked around I caught this guy looking out the window. I thought it was a neat shot.

He caught me!!!

That was the building he was in, which was a store.

So I decided to take a look inside.

I am so mad about this next picture. If I had gotten it in focus, it would’ve been such an awesome shot.

And back out I went to wander some more.

I zoomed down towards William and Mary College.

Hey look, the Oxen are out!

Let’s take a zillion pictures of them.

Such a cute store! I think the owner captured the theme very well! Those oxen look like they are giving you some dirty looks in a couple of those photos! CW does a great job keeping with the theme of the time though! Everything looks so well preserved.

It's too bad that the acting skills weren't better as I am sure it would have kept your attention more if they were.

The pictures that you took while wandering around are great! I especially like the one of the guy looking out the shop widow. That looked like it was a picture right out of that bygone time.

I would have had so much fun in this store. The oxen look impressive, too.

I was going to post an update tonight, but it appears that flickr is not working correctly and most of the pictures I posted before are not even showing up. They are up to no good with changing the website, so I am sure this is why it's not working. Maybe tomorrow......

Great update and pics.

The store looked really nice.

I swear, oxen always look like they are in a bad mood, don't they? :rotfl:

It really is a neat place to wander around and take pictures. It was so much fun to take pictures of something new too.
The guy in the window was just perfect.

The store was neat, but it's pretty pricey.

I saw this same guy when my family went to CW in July 2012.

How neat!!!!

After the Oxen sighting, I then spotted some characters coming down the road.

I really loved this about CW, characters here and there and having a colonial conversation.

If course, that was when I was in earshot. For all I really know it could’ve been “Hey Frank, when is you break? Want to go to lunch”.

I then wandered over to the store …the one we had been outside of for the ghost talk. I was so tempted to say something negative about the store, just to see if something came flying at me, but A, I didn’t want to get hit, and B, I would totally be freaked if something actually did come flying at me.

The storekeeper was very nice, but pushy. He really wanted me to buy the book about Colonial Williamsburg. He went on and on about how informative it is. I told him I actually had one at home, but it was a few years old. He insisted this one was better and updated. And I should be reading about what I was seeing as I walked around the streets. That may be true, but I know I wouldn’t do that. I would read it when I got home, which I have been reading the old one off and on at times. It does make much more since after I have seen the places, compared to a few years ago reading bits and pieces in it and not really being able to picture it.

It took me a bit, but I finally got away and he started in on some other customers.

Back outside I wandered some more.

I then went to put our name in for lunch, but I wasn’t allowed to till all of my party was there.

So I texted them and told them to come so we could be seated and then waited.

And waited……and waited. It seemed like it was taking them forever, even though they kept saying they were on their way. Well they were just down the road at the courthouse watching a session going on and they were waiting for it to be over. They said one of the guys there was our tour guide from the Palace the day before and again he was excellent.

Once we all were together, we were led into Chownings for lunch.

We did have some menu issues. Amanda didn’t like her options, but in the end, she went with a sandwich.

This is mine, and I think it was a French dip sandwich.

Amanda’s, which I think was a Turkey sandwich.

Claire went wild with peanut butter and jelly.

I believe mom went with the Brunswick Stew.

I don’t have a picture of Dad’s by my guess is he got a basic sandwich as well.

The food was decent, though I wouldn’t brag about my sandwich, it was still good. The food isn’t cheap here though, but we wanted to experience lunch at one of the taverns and this was a good choice and experience.

With bellies full, we headed back outside again.

We then made our way through town, trying to take in sites we hadn’t yet seen.

These guys were actually cutting wood for a building that was being constructed on a foundation that had been dug up. They are still expanding the town using original foundations when they can.

These people were digging out a site.

We talked to someone there and she told us they were extremely behind. Basically they had been working on this for quite some time and it needed to be finished with days for some special event and she didn’t see how it would be possible.

We kept wandering around.

I believe we separated again, but I don’t remember the reason why. It might’ve been just that we wanted to see different things. I think Mom and Amanda were shopping and I am not sure what Dad was doing. Claire and I found the bakery, but sadly they didn’t offer much more than the cookies we had bought on our first day here and they were not that good.

I was really hoping to find a homemade ice-cream shop, but there wasn’t one to be found.

This house was not open, but I read that it is open on certain occasions. I would’ve loved to have gone in there and checked it out.

Hidden Mickey!!!!! See I can find a bit of Disney anywhere.

I wasn’t sure if we were really supposed to be walking around the grounds here, but I’m a rebel, so I did.

A view of the Capital from here.

And we kept moving on then.

I love all of the photos. I would have bolted out of that store. I hate pushy sales people.

Yes, it was annoying and I wanted to be nice, but it was getting a bit too much so finally I just walked out.....after working my way to the door as we talked

Claire and I kept walking around and once again used the bathrooms. I am pretty sure we used about everyone on the property by the end of the trip.

A view of where we would eat tonight.

We then met up with the rest of the family and I think we grabbed the bus to take us to the other end to do some shopping.

Claire and I went in search of ice cream while the rest went through stores in the opposite direction.

Claire and I found a Baskin Robbins and went inside and each got ourselves a cone. Claire ended up not caring for her choice about halfway through, so I ended up eating about half of hers as well.

After that refreshing treat we moved on. I sat on a step and texted the family to ask where they were and I called Skip and we just relaxed a bit as it was hot today and we were getting tired. Claire posed for me.

Finally they replied and told us where to meet them.

We found them and decided we wanted to go see William and Mary College before calling it a day.

Claire found a friend on the way.

When we got to the college, Amanda and Claire said they were sitting while we looked around.

Isn’t that tree so neat.

It even has a support for one of its branches.

The rest of us took off to look around.

It is such a beautiful campus.

The big sprawling yard with lots of students just sitting there talking or doing homework. I think there was an event coming up soon that they were setting that tent up for.

I can’t even imagine the cost to send a child here, but I bet it is a pretty penny.

Squirrel!

Time to head back towards the bus stop.

I believe this is the day we decided to go in the William and Mary bookstore to look around. We found these Williamsburg t-shirts that were only like $9 each so Amanda and I each got one. Mom bought Claire a sweatshirt and I think Amanda bought one too.
It was a good purchase, as I wear the shirt quite a bit and I almost wish I had bought another one in a different color.

We then took the bus back to the visitor center and once again we took a quick look around the gift shop. We usually did this each day. I don’t think I actually bought anything there though. I know Mom had picked up a few things, but I don’t remember what.

Back at the resort I took Claire for a quick swim.

This girl just loves to swim and it’s a highlight for her.

We then took a quick rest and freshened up a bit before it was time to head for dinner. We were eating at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern tonight. We decided we would drive directly there today and not take the bus from the visitor center. I will admit, at times it is a little easy to turn down the wrong road, but we made it in one piece and still had time to spare.

We made our way around the front and checked in.

I took a few pictures while we waited.

I think someone had to use the bathroom, so we just walked across the street to use the ones near the capital.

A very pretty penny indeed! We asked when we were there, too much for us. DH would get the squirrel to eat out of his hand, he drew quite a crowd watching him feeding squirrels.
