we have never cruised before. Ever since I had the boys, I can't do spinning rides (tea cups and the like) and I can't do motion rides (body wars and the like) BUT I can ride in the car for hours, read in the car even and LOVE roller coasters. But now that I can't do the motion rides, I am a tad worried! So what does everyone else think? Have you taken a cruise and did fine, but still can't ride Body Wars?

I can't do spinning rides or motion/simulator rides, and I was okay on the ship.

That being said, I was extremely nauseous the first night on the Eastern as we crossed the Gulf stream and the waves were huge (the ship rocked rather noticably)... but the rest of the cruise I was fine, and the Western I wasn't as sick the first night.

Hope this helps

Hi there. I have what I'd call an iron stomach. Upside down, sideways, spinning, whatever never an issue. However on 2/29 the first night of our Wonder cruise I was almost on my knees with sea sickness. The sea was very rough and my equally iron stomached husband was also not feeling the love. We ended up buying Sea-Bands and after about 20 mins were both good to go!

I've been worried about that a little myself. I've always been able to do rollercoaster rides (we were at DL last year and I was fine), but later in the summer (we had season passes to Six Flags), I can't do the roller coaster or pretty much anything that leaves the ground. I think it's more of a height thing for me now and I've been on ferry rides in San Francisco Bay with no problems, so I'm thinking I might be okay. Going to bring Sea-Bands with me just in case. Just praying the waters will be waveless.

We too were on the 2/29 Wonder. It was our first cruise and we didn't know what to expect. The first night was very rough (similar to airplane turbulance) DH, DD & I wore the patch. I tend to get car sick if reading or in the back seat of a car but I didn't feel at all sick (just kind of dizzy, maybe from the patch or the motion of the boat, who knows!) But DH did feel motion sick. He took a Phenergan, went to bed & slept great! I think he was more worked up thinking the whole trip was going to be like that. BUT...it was over after that first night and the rest of the trip was wonderful.

Don't want to alarm you at all, overall, it was a fabulous experience and we rebooked while on board! The whole family rated the vacation a 10, best ever....even with that first night taken into consideration!

About the patch, DH would use it again. I would do my best to get by with out it. Meds just make me feel funny. DD & I really struggled with fuzzy vision while wearing it. I removed mine at the end of day 2 and felt fine for the rest of the cruise.

I think it's different for all people. I was totally stressed before our first cruise (Western) and we were blessed with low seas, excellent weather and no one felt a tiny bit sick.

Our cruise last year had the WORST seas the first two nights and dinner was empty; the halls were filled with DCL folks w/buckets of water and scrub brushes. You literally walked bumping into a wall on one sid e the other as you walked down the hallway.

Again, not a one of us got sick; my kids thought it was "fun" (so did I to be honest).

DD has gotten sick on the switchbacks to the volcano sunrise in Maui (going up and coming down), on the first day of being on a mountain (pre-skiing, from switchbacks getting there or altitude) and got sick on the individual sailboat we rented in St. Thomas. She was FINE on the Magic (but, hey it is magical you know).

I can't imagine it being much worse than the 11/1 cruise (in fact the crew said that was about as bad as it gets) so I feel pretty darn confident we're good to go.

I did fine on the ship, but can't do ANY simulator rides, and almost always have to be the driver to keep from getting very sick. (I even felt faint when you said you can READ in the car!):headache: :faint:

Bonine is now my drug of choice (I used to bow to the throne of children's tylenol because of the way it lowered fevers) as it kept my whole family from being seasick!

It's over the counter, raspberry flavored, easy to chew.

Sorry MickeyHugger! :)

thanks for all the advice! DH is a pharmacist, so we will have our supply of OTC meds to take with us, but the more I read on how well the Sea Bands work, we might just take them too! If I remember reading, they make them in kid sizes too? That might be nice if we run into rough seas!

I think we will be fine, but it just worried me a bit with the motion rides.....the motion on the sea..... I guess we'll just have to find out!

I'll add my 2 cents.

I have a cast iron stomach. I get a stomach flu once every 5-10 years and am not bothered at all by flying or driving. That said, I can't stand spinning rides. Hell to me is riding on Tom's Twister at Six Flags.

Being on the ship, however, was at first an interesting experience. We boarded early, had lunch and started exploring. Then, as we went into the kids club in the middle of Deck 5, I suddenly really felt the motion of the ship. Not in my stomach, but in my inner ear.

I really worried that this was a bad sign, but after a short while it wasn't a problem. We even had some fairly rough seas during dinner the first night, and DW/DD had trouble finishing their meals, but I was fine. You could definitely feel some motion at times, but it didn't bother me. I don't know if it was mind over matter, or what.

I will be bringing my ever present ginger capsules along. I tried the patch, but it reacts with prescription meds I am on and puts me to bed..even while standing in line at DL LOL. I also get a bad case of dry cotton mouth from the patch. I tried bonine and took it at night. They say to take it 2 days before you leave to get it in your system and see if it affects you. I did not take it on my last cruise (RCCI), until I woke up the first night rocking and felt a bit nauseus. I was fine by the morning.

I am hoping my kids will not have problems. Most of us cannot ride the stimulator rides or spin, although daughter who is 13 loves rides and brings a barf kit with her to the carnival every year knowing she will throw up (gross and not my idea of fun, but whatever) I can read in the car now, but for about 10 yrs could not. I guess as I age I am getting over the motion sickness? Things change I guess. Good luck.

I will say that while on our cruise last yr hubby had too much to drink and was praying to Ralph in the big white phone, I was having a blast singing karaoke in the lounge and holding the pole to stay upright. Was fun!!! Melissa

I'm getting a little nervous hearing all the "rough seas" stories. My kids have never had a problem with motion sickness, but I'm not taking the chance and will make sure I have every-over-the-counter medicine for us possible. Better to be safe than sorry

For those of you who are worried about motion sickness onboard, you might be surprised. I'm the Queen of Motion Sickness, (ask DH, he'll roll his eyes, Oh goooosh!) and I felt fine on both cruises. I didn't take OTC remedies or prescriptions either.

We're cruising again in May, and I'm hoping I'll be as fortunate!:teeth:

I've been on so many cruises (mostly before I was married, and only had to pay ONE fare!), and some of those cruises have been very rough (tropical depressions and hurricanes). The one piece of advice I have learned - tell yourself I am NOT going to be sick. I was in a cabin full of seasick people for a 10 day cruise (I won't go into detail) and what saved me? getting OUT of the cabin, in the fresh air when I could or large rooms and keep your mind off being sick. Compared to the old days of cruising, I don't even feel the Disney cruise ships rock (kindof miss it). Good Luck.

Once again my head is spinning from just reading this thread. I take dramamine every day we go to a theme park. I don't do the carousel (even with the meds) Once in a while I'll go on the tea cups to give the kids a full speed spinning ride (my eyes closed and everyone knows that I need to sit and rest for a good 30 minutes to recover - but I do it for the kids).

That being said, I have never felt sick on the Magic (on the small snorkel boats in port YES YES YES, but not on the ship). THe wife and kids have felt a little sick once or twice on the ship and they never get sick at the parks. I do take the meds starting a day or two before sailing (if not going to the parks - otherwise I'm already on them). And I usually forget to take them after being onboard for a couple of days and have been fine.

I have an earlier poster (Jestocost) beat. As soon as we start walking down the hallway to our stateroom I really feel the ship moving up and down. I feel like I'm walking uphill and then running down hill (think of the boat in the intro to Gilligians Island). Once in the room the motion subsides quite a bit. Then back out into the hallway and its up and down again. Oh, by the way, we are still tied up at Port Canaveral and not moving an inch while my head is doing this to me:earseek: And it doesn't stop until weeks after we get off of the ship. But I love cruising!!!:wave2:

Wow jrabbit, that's harsh. I'm not EVEN going to whine about feeling a little dizzy on certain rides. You guys have me beat. My mother-in-law just informed me that she gets motion sickness (my in-laws will be traveling with us). She's done rides with the kids, so I don't know how bad it is. Would it be better to get lower deck cabins or does it really matter? We're looking at getting a room with a port hole, so we obviously can't go too low.

I'm not going to worry about something I can't control and will just make sure I have something for me and the kids just in case.

I use sea bands and bonine - when I walk from aft to forward, the visual of the ship going up and down on the sea horizon bothers me so I try not to look directly ahead.

I notice that people who stay in the sun a long time and drink alcohol have a harder time the first night.
