Hi all,

I'm just wondering if you are planning to purchase the mugs that the resorts offer. I can't believe how expensive they are now. When we were on our Honeymoon they were $7 each. Now they are $12 each!

I think I'll drive to Walmart and buy a cooler and some soda (and beer) plus snacks. I bet it will be cheaper than $12 per person ($48 for a family of four).

Do you guys think the mugs are still worth it?

DH and I always buy the mugs. I think they are worth the money. They also make great souvenirs! The biggest downfall is that you cannot get unlimited juice and since we usually eat breakfast at the resort each morning, we end up drinking soda instead. So if you are not a big soda or coffee drinker, it may not be worth it to get the mugs. The other downfall is that they can be a hassle if you want to go straight to the parks and don't want to carry the mugs around all day. We just run back to our room and drop them off.

I like them as a keepsake, but, if the intent is to just buy them for the free refills, then, IMHO, it is pricey. A 12 pk of 12 oz. soda can be had for about 2.50, free ice at the resorts. Seems like a no brainer for me. But, that is just me. But, hey, this way you can reuse the mugs. :)

We passed on the mugs this last trip because of the cost and I really prefer Pepsi over Coke products. We filled our cooler with soda we bought at the grocery store, and for our family of 5 it made more sense. Also, soda doesn't really quench your thirst when it is hot, you really need more water than soda.

We'll probably buy at least 1 of them on our upcoming trip. We are a family of 4 and we'll have TONS of Pepsi and water in our room, but hubby needs his coffee! I drink Pepsi at home everyday for breakfast, so Pepsi for breakfast won't be too much of an inconvience while in Disney!

Hubby will then decide if the mug is worthy of taking back and forth to work each day. Some hold more than others. Some keep drinks hotter for a longer period of time...etc..

If he finds a great MUG....we'll probably end up purchasing 3 more of them just so he has 4 extra mugs for work.

I think it would depend on how long we were staying. When we stay a week or more, then I like to purchase the mugs. This next trip will only be for 5 days. In this case, it won't be worth the cost.

The mugs have never really been a good deal. They are a convenience item. We try not to eat at the hotels because ut that in itself is pricey. Go the cooler route.

We use them every morning and evening for coffee - that alone is worth it b/c $24 on coffee for 10 days would be WAY more than that. When we are kicking back at the pool/hotel and at those occasional meals in the food court (Riverside) we use it for soda, so even if the price went up we would still get it. My dd loves her mugs she has collected and at the $12 it's worth it for her.

Our grandkids think that is part of the "Disney experience" - going and getting their drinks and then at night they always have hot chocolate before bed.

We never buy the mugs, but we also never go to the food courts, because we always keep pop, snack and breakfast items in the room. If you plan on going to the food court to eat than the mugs would be a good value, but if you are like me and like to stay in your room and have breakfast and snacks, the cooler would be a better deal. We didn't even get a cooler, we just keep ice in the room and poured the drinks in glasses.

Another thought is that you don't get one for every person.... maybe only get 2 and share....obviously not as easy as everyone having one but still better. While I am not a coffee drinker, my parents are and they said that they always get 1 and share.
Just a thought!

I would go with the one per trip, not per person. We three got one each last time and I am the only person who even still has theirs. So, I wll get one next time but I won't buy one for dd or dh.

I'm sure we'll buy at least two for our upcoming trip. DH and I are coffee drinkers and the kids love Coke products. I rationalize the cost by looking at the mug as a souvenier and I feel like we'll get enough refills over a 5 night trip to justify it anyway even though we'll make a grocery stop on the way in.

I am a sucker for Disney souvies, lol. We bought each of us one on our last trip in 2002 and I honestly cannot remember a day that I haven't used them since our trip. I start each day with a coffee in one, then I keep one handy with water in the afternoons and usually I have a decaf in the evening while watching tv. For us it was definitely a good investment. We were at the Contemporary and it was pretty easy to pop over and get refills. If it were further away it might not have been so easy a task. This year we're looking at the Poly concierge so really won't need the refillables but I'm sure we'll get at least one so I can remember the resort fondly at home!

Incidentally, does anyone have any ideas for getting the inside really white again? I've tried soaking with bleach/water solution, dishwasher, even baking soda but still they look dingy.

Try using Plastic Booster 2-in-1 by Cascade. You can either use it in the dishwasher when washing the mugs or just put a drop in the bottom of the mug and fill with hot water. Let soak for a little while, then wash. I use this on our mugs all the time. They are sparkling white inside like when we first bought them.

disney4us2002,

A lady at work noticed my dingy mug at the sink the other day and suggested I use a tablet such as you would use to clean dentures. I believe she mentioned Polident. She said they were also good for cleaning coffee makers as you didn't have to worry about an after-taste like you would when using white vinegar.

I like to vacation on a budget but there is nothing like a fresh Coke with ice in the morning in my refillable mug. We love them!! Definitely worth it for us. Plus, we like to collect them from each vacation and put them on a special shelf at home.

This past year my family of four was in Disney for a week but it was broken into to resorts. We stayed at the Contemporary and the WL. We bought one mug at each resort. We would share (we brought the kids juice boxes because they are pretty young for soda) the mugs for the coffee fix and soda when we returned in the afternoon for a break. Then refill again before we headed out for what ever we had chosen that evening. I am pretty sure that we did hot chocolate a lot at night. Then in the night when we were in for the evening we would refill to get a cup of tea. I dont know what it is about that tea in the Contemporary but I was addicted. ::yes::

I like them at home as well. It helps me to enjoy a little piece of the magic at home.

This trip we're going light on the soft drinks with the 4 grands - plus we're staying at HR, then SOG and then at POFQ so buying mugs doesn't make sense. We WILL bring back our Blizzard Beach mugs from last year as I'm a recycler and feel fine about it because we pay the daily charge and get a new sticker . The kids can have some sprite or coke on their BB days but I won't spend a bloomin fortune. And since SOG and POFQ have coffee makers in the room we'll bring our own coffee as 'G' can't get enough of the stuff and he hates the food court coffee. I'm going to buy lots of 100% juice boxes for the kiddos and lots of water for us all at our grocery stop. What soft drinks we do buy at the grocery stop will be few and cheap.

We buy them every trip and love them! DH & I both use travel mugs daily for our coffee anyway, so it's nice to get a souvenier we'll actually get a lot of use out of when we get back home *and* get some use out of during the trip. We averaged at least 3 or 4 fill-ups per person per day (coffee with breakfast, then fill with soda before heading out to the park, then filling with soda again once or twice in the evening back at the resort), so they paid for themselves pretty quickly for us. We don't buy them for the kids -- we buy them milk at breakfast, and we *all* drink mainly water at the parks, then let them drink a little soda now & then from our mugs in the evenings back at the resort (exept when DH spikes it with rum :jester: ) . I'll be at the Pop in a couple of weeks and I don't have a mug from there yet -- can't wait to get one!! My most recent AsSp mug is looking pretty dingy -- time for a new mug anyway!
